Downeast ice-out continues
« on: Mar 01, 2016, 05:24 PM »
i talked to a Maine Fish and Wildlife biologist today who told me the ice had gone out of Walker's Pond in Brooksville, Eagle Lake in Bar Harbor, and Long Pond in Somesville-Southwest Harbor. It sure went fast, but there was never a lot of ice this "winter". Other coastal lakes and ponds will likely clear soon.

Get that tarp off. Martha can't wait for April vacation. She'll have to call in sick.

Downeast Maine Pond.  Glad my shack was next to shore.  Looks like it will go out completely by the weekend if the weather and wind continues.

Hopefully 40 miles north doesn't look like that.

In addition to ice out at Gardner and Indian Lake  nearly 2 weeks ago, my wife and I checked on many more lakes, many of which are now ice-free or nearly so.

Hadley Lake, East Machias - ice free
Cathance Lake, Cathance Twp - about 1/3 free of ice
Meddybemps Lake, Meddybemps - ice free
Pleasant Lake, Alexander - still ice-covered but many holes are opening up
Pocomoonshine Lake, Alexander - 99% ice free with a little on some shores
Crawford Lake, Crawford - 95% ice free except a little by landing and in some coves
Bog Lake, Northfield - 99% ice free
Six-Mile Lake, Marshfield - ice free
Lewy Lake, Indian Twp and Princeton - 95% open except NW corner
Big Lake, Indian Twp and Grand Lake Stream - lots of open water at Peter Dana Point and entrance to Long Lake, but much of lake still iced over
West Grand Lake in Grand Lake Stream - about 1/4 mile above dam is ice free
