Cleats/crampons help
« on: Jan 17, 2011, 09:17 AM »
Hello all, I have been reading up on these forums and gleaned a lot of good info, but have a very basic question - sorry I am such a newbie!  I am born and raised in South Florida and never so much as seen it snow.  Now as part of my job I will be on an icebreaker crossing the North Pole this summer, which will require me to spend many hours sitting next to a hole in the ice.

I am learning all about layering and thermals and such, but have a question about traction.  If I am not running or hiking over uneven terrain, do I need cleats or crampons on my boots?  I have never walked on ice/snow before so really have no clue what I am getting into.  Thanks!

If your walking on snow you sould be fine with regular boots.  On ice though the spikes help but are not absolutely necessary.

You need crampons.  Because they have the ability to dislodged snow/ice and prevent that from packing up under your feet.
