Blue...I don't have a clue!! Fish the Red heavy each winter till just after New Years. Been doing so for a bit over 20 years. Have seen the odd goldeye caught during the winter but it was until now rare enough to turn heads. Could it be abundant forage or a strong age class...I don't know?
Have been targeting them as of late. Took 7 one morning... Kind of figured it out but they are such light biters and have the habit of swimming up when hooked... make them tough to catch. I'm a big fan of super-lite tackle but find that a bit of lead is required to get small baits down 20 or so feet with the current to the goldeye. These fellas also seem to "spook" easy when the least bit of resistance is felt.
Another strange thing that goldeye have done to me is to entangle two lines should the holes be too close together... like in a shanty. Seems once hooked they shoot up or sideways catching a nearby line.
Just my two cents worth!!
