sled modifications and inventions
« on: Mar 16, 2007, 06:47 PM »
I'm trying to build a wood frame for my sled
to hold my new power auger and gear.

Anyone have a picture of their sled
and the modifications.

Looking for ideas.

I've had my bait bucket dump on the trail to the lake
and hope to build something to prevent another misshap.
Would someone invent a bait lid that is leakproof but could be swapped
out for the original lid once you arrive at your fishing destination. The leak proof
lid would go on the bait bucket and the original lid goes on the top of the leakproof lid
so they stay together. Just pry apart when needed.
While I'm at it....

How about a mouth piece tooth brush.(Like football players wear) No more jamming a tooth brush into your gums. (ouch, mommy) Make it electric. Just pop it in your mouth and bite down. The rest is done for you.

I know back scrubbers exist, but howabout one you hang on the wall in the shower
and rub up against it like a bear. No more acting like a contortionist to clean your back.
Call it a shower BIT_ _.

anyway....Lets see your sled or ideas.

to hold your baitpail, try putting 2 eyebolts in the lip of your sled .then bunjicord a 5 gallon pail using the eyebolts.put your baitpail in the 5 gallon pail.any small spills will be into the 5 gallon pail.then you can put the 5 gallon pail to use out on the ice for a seat.

In my sled (jet sled sr.), I use three plastic milk crates to hold my gear.  In one, I place my tip-ups and some jigging gear (lure boxes), In the second one I put a 5 gallon bucket, into which I place my bait pail.  That leaves room for some other gear which holds the bucket securely in place (or, you can bungee cord the bucket in place by hooking to the milk crate).  In the third crate goes my Vex, lunch cooler, and extra socks, hat, etc.
Now for the hard part --- the power auger!  On top of the crates I place my Pak Shack, and on top of that I put the auger.... then with two bungee cords I secure everything to the sled.
Since I started using this method I have had no spills at all!!
You can usually beg a few milk crates from your local 7-11.

Snowed 16" last night.
I'm not going anywhere today.
This gives me some time to think about the sled.

I gathered all my stuff and now I can hopefully
find a place for it all.
So far, I cut a sheet of 1/4 inch plywood to cover 3/4 of
my medium Jet Sled. The front is uncovered.
In the back, I cut a rectangle out so I can place the
power head of the auger. The blade goes into the sled.
I can place my tipups and storage container on top of the plywood.
So far so good. Eye bolts will hold the plywood to the sled, twist them to
lock in the plywood. This is by no means finished.

If the pic actually works (first time posting pic)... all i did to mine was add pvc spacers and mount mine to skiis.  Its simple but it pulls like a champ and i dont plow snow any more.  Plust the box of the sled is a commercially made plastic sled, so the whole thing is extremely light weight.  the jiffy gets bungied to the top of the container and rests over my bait and tip-up bucket

When I'm not using my fish trap, I use my little sled.

That's my prospecting bucket. I took PVC drain tailpeices and bolted them to the bucket.  2 hold rods and 1 is for the scoop. The top is padded and there's a compartment under it to hold stuff.

Sometimes it's just the auger , bucket and a couple of rods. Simpler is better ...if it's warm enough ;D

Ice fishers are the worlds best inventors!

Poorcollegeboy:  I see the spacers between the sled and the skis (appear to be pieces of PVC pipe) but, how do you fasten the pipe to the sled/skis????

5 1/2 " carriage bolts, with the skiis drilled out so the heads arent exposed.  in between the head of the bolt and the actual ski i used some rubber washers to provide some cushioning since internal part of the skiis are pretty soft.  I used cross country skiis and sawed them down since they were so long... theyre really flexible for the drag from the truck to the lake... my next project is to build a ramp i can easily slide the sled down for unloading out of the truck when fishing by myself

Too bad you don't live closer to me.  I have tent poles galore.  At least from 3 old canvas tents and one mosquito tent.  I will be making a small folding ice hut (like an accordian) using tent poles.  Just getting out of the wind is all I want.
