That hole is probly for top water bass fishing or deep diving crank baits.

The hole is there all winter long. And yes, you can fish the open water if you like. I have caught some nice trout in the open water. Some days there is even a hatch coming off and you can whip out the fly rod!

The ice in that pic was 14" or so 3 ft from the edge. Thats my hut in the pic.

I swear we are on a lake in this pic. Whiteout conditions, about 15 inches of snow in one day, sure glad i brought my honda... Porter lake in Maine

You've heard of ice fishermen complaining about getting their gear taken out by ATV's or snomobiles? This is another source in Helena, MT. These baby's travel over 70mph when the wind and ice is just right! not a good Idea to leave gear unattended.
