Fish Elevator
« on: Jan 16, 2006, 04:48 PM »
Has anyone tried one of these? To me it seems like the fish would get caught on the thing under the ice and get tangled up. Their ad picture shows the fish coming in from the side of the hole opposite from the device but if you get a wild one it will hang up for sure. Seems like a waste of thirty bucks.

Looks to me that it would be another easy item that would go down the hole.  Save a step and just throw your money into the lake..

Seems like once you got the fish in the hole it would work allright but all the good fish Ive caught circle the hole before coming in.  As they went around they would get wrapped in the elevator seems like a good idea not thought thru.

It looks like an other thing I'd have in the sled but not use .... If I can't pull the fish through the ice by hand I'll use the gaff   :-X

Actually when my buddies and I were fishing URL in N MN we would lose a lot of the bigger crappies at the top of the hole.  We got to thinking and came up with the same idea.  We were going to build one and perhaps persue a pantent.  We did a patent search and the idea had already been patented in 1972.

Thanks to Billybono for the weblink.

Looks to me like a guy would need one for each hole that he's fishing (that could be up to five here in Maine).  I'm not sure that an additional $125 in gear would make Mother happy (not one bit happy...).

Has anybody actually used one of these babies ?

I agree Smeltecca, getting a big fish started up the hole is usually more of a  problem then getting it on the ice once it's in the hole.   Having something like that device hanging down there would only complicate things.  I have had a couple good sized fish come unhooked while they were IN the hole, but I don't even think twice and will plunge my arm down and scoop them out before they have a chance to wiggle back down.  I also am one that will save my money, even though I'm a gadgetaholic!  ;D
Are you SURE it's safe to walk on? Looks questionable to me!

Yup, used it several times. Never had any problems with fish wrapping up. Worked very good actually. The only problem I could forsee with it is if your in one spot long enough for the hole to start to freeze up a bit,you will not get it back out.I used the 8 inch model in a 10 inch hole and never lost a fish. Everything from crappies to 8lb cats using 2 to 4 lb line. Ice was 30 inches thick.

Oh, and prety much impossible to lose down the hole .

Does look like 1 more thing to fall in the hole. Better to just throw the thirty dollars away.

Not a bad idea for when your going for them huge hogs that always manage to wrap the ducer or break off in the hole .

I dont think you will lose this device down the hole . If you can read It says it has a floating handle and just  from looking at it I can see it would be impossible for it to make it completely down the hole .

For 25 bucks its worth a try .

The ONLY way it will go down a hole is if your hole is bigger than 11 inches.

My brother-in-law made one about 10 years ago before we ever heard of the manufactured one. It actually works pretty good. Seemed we would loose a big fish right in the hole. This blocks off the bottom of the hole if your line breaks. If you are fishing on 6 - 10" of ice I wouldn't bother with it, but we go on an annual trip late in the season when there's 3 ft of ice. One guy plays the fish while another guy uses the fish saver (what we call it) and keeps it out of the way for you. Actually we don't put it down the hole until the fish is almost to the hole. Here's a picture of it strapped to the side of a dog sled.

The thing that looks like a big skimmer with an orage handle.

We talked to a warden about it being legal or not. He said it was no different than a guy netting a fish for you from a boat.
