what's up with cisco
« on: Jan 22, 2011, 05:06 PM »
I KNOW IT IS A WELL KNOWN FACT THAT CISCO is the best bait for big macks but I also know it is illeagle to us them or any part of them in Wyoming. So this is my question I know nobody in Wyoming would go against game and fish laws and cheat so why is there always 3 times more guy's getting cisco during the run from Wyoming than there is from Idaho or Utah???? I ask 3 guy's from Wyoming what they were going to do with 90 cisco eat them the replay was hell no (stumped)

Utah game fish that looks like a big sardine...bout 8-10 inches long... ::) few years ago, they were specifically listed as illegal even though they are not a Wyoming game fish, although I just scanned through the 2010-11 regs and saw no mention of them. May be a Q for our new G&F guys ?  ;)

I did the same, LT, finally found it on pg. 9 under "Methods". The only part you can use is the Eggs of the Cisco.

They are a salmonid (as are trout), similar to whitefish.  The logic, I believe, is that you could very easily use a whitefish (a game fish) as bait and it would be hard to prove it was not a cisco....

not only is cisco illegal, they are totally unnecessary and detrimental to the fishery.  we catch plenty of big macs with jigs.  when a mac takes a cisco dead-baited, they usually swallow the minnow and the hook.  i am of the opinion that a mac with a big, hard-alloy treble hook in its gut is a dead, or very unhealthy, mac.  also, cisco are known to carry bacteria foreign to our bodies of water, risking contamination.  if you want to dead-bait, use naturally-occurring bait like sucker minnows or sucker fillets.  also sculpin is good.

I agree, and there are more and more people fishing with a dead minnow laying on bottom and letting the fish run for a long time before "Setting the Hook". All that does is let thet fish get the treble deeper into its stomach. I wish they would wake up and see what its doing to our big fish population. IMO

We all know that cisco isn't legal in Wyoming. what's the point in talking about it any more? As far as i'm concerned, the topic is dead...period.
