re-purposed washing machine
« on: Feb 08, 2014, 10:05 PM »
well I've been needing to get more organized since I am doing a lot more ice fishing this winter, this will replace the "bucket-n-poles-n-everything else in one hand, auger in the other" system I've been using. It isn't finished by a long shot, still a lot of features I am going to add, but it's useable as is for now and I will work on the rest of it when I can. Cut down an old washing machine (gutted it first, down to nothing but the light sheet metal skin) to just high enuf for a 5 gal. bucket to sit inside. Some light welding to bring the bottom corners and overlaps together, attatched an old seat from a kitchen chair, couple 2x2s for runners, rope, couple s hooks for the spoon and I was givin' it a test run. It weighs next to nothing, even with all my stuff in it. @) Sorry the pics aren't very clear, it was overcast and snowin' when I snapped these.

First one I have seen in years that is still being used.  My Friend has one just to show people old tech. I was offered one for free once and turned it down. I also saw a brand spanking new one on E-bay one day.

30 years ago everyone had these. I remember going out on some of the big lakes late season and boring through 30+ inches of ice in no time at all. What we did (as I am sure others did as well) was to put two guys on the auger at the same time. It was amazing how fast we could punch out 6-8 holes. Brings back some great memories.

Very nicely done! Probably heavier than a lot of other boxes out there but an excellent choice for a lot of reasons.

Thank you all for your positive feedback, altho it probably isn't what you'd call your "ideal" sled,  I think it will serve the purpose, at least until I can decide on and afford a real sled with a flip shelter. :-\

I agree, I have 2-8" gas augers, 1 old 6" Normark Finbore hand auger, 3-6"& 1-8" Swedish Snaab spoons... I always seem to grab my 6 inch spoon and head out! They are easy to move around and they almost always start, altho the hydraulics do whine sometimes! ;D

A paint job is definitely on the list when all the special effects are installed, might be summer tho when the temps are nice and warm. ;)

I am thinkin an old snowboard cut in half to make 2 wide skis and put em flat on the bottom so it'll ride over the snow, it is so light that I think it'll work, then it will stay the right height for sittin' on. ;D
