Smeltin!
« on: Jan 12, 2015, 04:19 PM »
Welp, its that time of year again guys, got my first Smelt of the year last night on the outgoing! Yeah its one but I worked for it LOL but we all know they school. Felt good to get out, you other coastal boys know what I mean. No seaworms locally yet used crawlers or I think I would of done better. 6" of ice, I feel confident enough that my hardside has been out since Sunday AM.

I`ve had tremendous luck with cut sucker bait ,(very good old fisherman showed me this one) wouldn`t go without it. Another tidbit is if you have any little venison tidbits! ;)

If the venison trick works? Frankies got plenty of that in the freezer to experiment with  ;)

Over hear in the landlocked state we use slices of smelt filets. nothing better than smelt to catch smelt! But I might not sacrifice a smelt if I thought it was the only one I was gonna catch. 67 on the first trip out for us
Come on get on the ice fish!!

When I fished a lake in northern Maine last year, that's what we used too. One sacrificed smelt usually lasted about a dozen more in the pail. Never tried the salt-run guys. For my money, smelt are one of the best tasting fish out there. And when you get into them, the most fun to catch. And of course, they have the added advantage of doubling as free bait when you're on  fresh water.

That's as many as I caught last year. Maybe if you honored tradition and bit the head off you would have caught more. I might try to take the pop up out this week, is that generally better incoming? I am guessing you got the only shack out that I saw today in my travels.

I always do best on a incoming or outgoing that changes at sundown, yesterday was perfect. I just think the days of big runs are gone no matter what bait or tricks you have up your sleeve

Agree with slices of smelt but we get equal catch rates on spikes...easier to deal with.

dip the crawlers in iodine... it makes a difference and keeps them from bleaching as fast... it'd be nice if we'd get a smelt run... I've been picking a few up in Hampton and from the docks in Gloucester... but nothing like the old days... grass shrimp and tommy cods are good as well..

Now that is funny! I was once fishing with smelts and an old timer came up to me and said, "Son, you ain't gonna catch nothing better eating than those baits you have in there!" Now using venison? Guy would have probably popped a blood vessel.
