Do any of you have a report on Bass Lake by Somerset? How is the ice, and is there a bite?

I haven't been there yet this year, but there has never been much of a bite on bass...which is why it's so puzzling that they have a derby there, but whatever.   If you are heading to somerset, I would either go to deer lake (st. Croix falls).  Or even balsam lake in Polk county

Good luck!

Matt

We are going to Deer Lake on friday the 24th. Then fish the tournament on the 25th.

I was trying to get a feel for how much ice was on Bass. We are driving 300 + miles up there. I have a friend in Somerset and a friend and I come up for a visit and hit the tournament while we are there.

well...it's only about 5 miles south of my house...next time i drive by with the auger i'll pop a couple of holes and tell you the conditions.  odds are though that you wont be driving out for the contest.  most lakes around here are only in the 12-16 in. range.  i haven't been on deer yet but measured balsam on saturday and drove out on 19.5".

Thanks.  That's plenty of ice for me. I don't need to drive out on the lake.

Had a friend fish it this past weekend.  He drove his full size pickup out and he don't take chances.  Said he got a couple small bluegills is all.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

How much ice?...in inches...my auger just stripped a gear and I'm sorry no more holes until I can get it fixed or possibly talk the wife into a new one.

I have no idea on the ice thickness. But I will be there for the derby.
