I have a little creek i dip minnows out of every winter for crappie and they are around 2 to 2 1/2 inches and they work great! but i have seen medium shiners gobbled up by bigger crappie and bigger perch

the best size to use, i feel, is determined by the size of the forage fish in a given lake at a given time. We all have seen small fish taken on large bait, and large fish taken on small bait. match the size to what the majority of the fish are feeding onn, and you'll have a field day.   gospel according to 'mick'

Fatheads and shiners, but fatheads seem a bit easier to avoid the pickerel onslaught.

I'm in ct so it might not make a big difference for you guys but the only thing I use big bait for through the ice is pike the walleye under my post came from a 2 inch golden shiner on a dead stick about 2 feet away from me jigging a 4 inch chubby darter like someone else said it really depends what there eating that doesn't have a hook in it, yes it is true for the most part big bait will stray off smaller fish but it doesn't mean that it's gunna make a bigger fish chew. The bigger difference I see beetween catching dinks and good fish is location and where in the water column your fishing I've had plenty of times perch and walleye fishing where if I set my traps a foot off the bottom or jigges a foot off the bottom I would catch generally smaller fish but ten feet up there where bigger fish not as many but bigger and vice versa with smaller fish up high and bigger fish below them. Just my two cents for what it's worth

I agree on the bigger is better but its a long slow day most of the time, but I have caught big fish on little bait to so sometimes if you are just fishing for pan fish with small bait I prefer fat heads and just set 1 or 2 tip ups with big bait, another thing to consider is whats big bait to you the big baits I use you wont find in any bait stores around here so I catch my own and keep them in a tank in the basement,I think fat heads are the best bang for your buck at the bait shop ;D

It depends, if I have the kids out or just want to catch a bunch of fish, I will use smaller fatheads, but if I am looking for some fish to eat, I will use the medium to large fatheads.  Good luck, will be fishing this week...awesome.  Nez
