big fish eating trout
« on: Dec 19, 2011, 03:10 AM »
Those who have caught monster size trout...

As trout get massive, especially browns, they seem to eat more fish, correct?  I am just thinking that a big brown trout for example, would behave like more of a carnivor munching on other fish.

If that is correct, would lake trout tactics work well for big trout, since lakers also munch their fellow fish?

So have your hogs been caught on little more traditional trout set ups or bigger laker like set ups?

I have caught a lot of big brown on very small jigs and flies, however, I do like a nice chubby black-nosed dace through the ice.  Brown candy!
I'm cold and I like it

Most areas in Colorado don't allow live minnows for trout.  My biggest have been caught with both extremes, small Ratsos/finkees and a bigger tube jig.  Browns are aggessive and will hit the bigger stuff, rainbows like smaller stuff mostly IMO.

we use sucker meat on the bottom in early sring for big browns, so I was thinking that might work through the ice

Best thing to do is to find out what kind of forage/baitfish are in the pond you are going to fish? Thats more than likely what they are eating...The BIG Bait = Big Fish will work... But I think normally, they are eating what is most natural/common in the lake.

I caught the top one on a big xrap and the others on spawn sacks and single salmon eggs. Big bait doesn't always mean big fish. Right place, right time, right bait.
