Pickerels all day long
« on: Feb 08, 2010, 07:31 AM »
Waterman yesterday, nothing but picks, even had one that wrapped itself around a dock rope that got away.

Then that would be the smallest Pike we ever got without a doubt.

Congrats!! You are holding the smallest pike you have ever caught. Watermans seems to be full of those little guys and way to many tiny cigar pickerel.
The easiest way to tell a pike is fin coloring, pattern and shape. Just my opinion.

Yes you are correct that is the little pike.  That leads me to say they have been breeding as to the best of my knowledge the state stop putting them in a long time ago.  Give it a few more years and kep it catch and release and all thoslittle pickeral will have bite marks and such in them and there will be some giants in there.  I know they are big now fished it and caught some  will never tell though.  Anyway good pictures and looks like you had alot of laughs.

Not sure if this makes a difference but the one in the 3rd pic has bigger fins on the bottom than the rest, especially in the center and front of its body.  Maybe that could be the deciding factor as to whether it is a pike or pickerel

Although the pattern/color is most definently unmistakeably if your looking at the two fish in person - in the scientific world color is the worst way to identify an animal.  Look at the dorsal fin guys. ;)

FYI I'm no scientist the pictures just aren't that good.

it's a pike. look at the pattern on the fins. pickeral don't have that pattern. this could be a long post from the way this is going.

yea the fins are more rounded.  After getting it out, taking the hook out, measuring it and then trying to get it back in the water as quick as possible barely even took the time to figure out what it was.  Like I said it would be the smallest pike yet we've gotten.  Funny thing looking at the internet about the differences some areas of the country/world call them the same thing.  Course that could be a different pickerel than the chain kind.

Guess I'm just too used to catching the big ones, I'll defer to those who get the smaller ones ;D (and that's a joke just in case anyone takes it seriously)
