I was looking into attending the festival. I was wonder ing if anyone could tell me some of the rules or regulations. The website shows old rules, unless they havent changed? Can a guy use his own perminant shack, like my ice castle?

The rules never change...You have to buy a button to enter Eelpout, trophy for the biggest Pout, awards for most pounds of Pout. etc. Can sign up as a team for team tonnage also. Pout caught Friday, Saturday and Sunday am count. They usually give away a icehouse each year randomly drawn from all the button numbers fisherman or not. Are suppose to be caught on Leech Lake but that includes bays like Kabakona etc. Its really just Mardi Gras on Ice in Minnesota. If you want to catch pout get away from the crowd..fish at night not party... Yes everyone in Minnesota that likes to drink beer and ice fish usually comes and brings their own ice house. So bring your IceCastle you will see a lot of them! Some build their own on the ice..lots not for fishing but just for partying.
If you party to much you wont catch many eelpout.
You bring your Pout in for weigh in each day. You need a minnesota fishing license, rough fish like walleyes, Perch, Northerns dont count and are suppose to be released into the Grease. Good luck and have fun.. Hope we get some COLD weather to put some more ice on... not enough to drive a truck on Walker bay now!

Been quite a few years since I attended one. I never would of thought you could used a frozen pout as a funnel to down some vodka.
Best time I ever had.

Stay in your IceCastle! You want to fish at night anyway to catch Pout! Motels and resorts do a search for LeechLake tourism bureau

It's not a typical "contest." More of a party than a fishing contest. Rules are pretty lax. Any pout caught during the weekend can be entered. Solo or as a team. It really is Mardi Gras on ice.

Sounds like my kind of fishing. Is there anything i should know or bring? I do plan on sleeping in the shack. I know the essentials beer, shack, transportation, back up beer, and fishing gear. I have a atv is it worth bringing to get around on or would it be more of a hassle?

I've never been to this event but I have heard of it. Is it just a big drinking party or is it a place to go, see, and do different things? Is it pretty much an adult event or is it kid friendly?

The main area is a big drinking event at night, lots of fun but not kid friendly. During the day it is fine for kids. There are alot of events going on to check out and go back to your fish house for the evening of fishing if you are not interested in a party. Make sure not to camp near walker shoreline area if you wantto be able to get good sleep tho. The party is loud and goes all night long.
The festival is deffinatly a great time and everyone can find a way to enjoy it. Don't miss out on the best weekend of the winter.

A few of us college kids are planning on making trip down to go to it this winter. It sure sounds like it one awesome party, so if you throw ice fishing in with it, it cant get much better.

You can try Hackensack since thats fairly close, don't stay at the Cass Lake Casino Hotel, dirty dirty, and the Natives are very restless there. I got barked at... Me and a buddy will be going up this year in our '69 Pathfinder camper again. Had quite a few more going but everyone had to back out due to money reasons, we'll be up there a whole week this time. Get ahold of me bobracing before you head up, we'll let you know where we are.

Hackensack is nice and close
Longville is closer than Pine River (actually the same distance as Cass Lake, but a lot nicer atmosphere)
There are plenty of resorts between Hackensack and Longville that have cabins available in the winter. Broadwater Lodge has nice winter accomodations, but it would be about a 25 mile drive to Walker.
BEST OPTIONS
1. if you have an IceCastle, why not just stay in it?
2. Check resorts in the area ... The RESORTS on PINE POINT are NICE AND CLOSE TO WALKER
- I know Pine Point Resort has cabins available in the winter.
- Just checked the website for
Big Rock Resort
(10 miles from Walker) and they still had
two cabins available
for Eelpout weekend
