What weight line you guys using for pan fish?
« on: Feb 11, 2011, 05:39 PM »
I just spooled up with some 1# test line...Did I make
a mistake doing so? I figured the jig would drop better
without having to use some splits on it..And set the drag
real light as well...
too cold ....aint going out there..

No Problem but it depends on the brand. American lines aren't IGFA class. 1# is in the 2# IGFA area. True IGFA 1# breaks at @ ~1.1#.  Soft rod, subtle hookset, easy reeling in and you should be fine regardless. I use 2# ASSO an IGFA line but will go down to 12oz if need be

You could prob get a hundred different answers to this. It mainly comes down to personal preference. I use 4 lb on all my poles and have caught everything from 2 inch gills to 30 in northerns on them. Then again someone else will say to catch shy fish use 1 lb or less I have never had any issue keeping up fish 4 fish with anyone due to the weight of line. If you love the fight and have a soft hand try your 1 lb you might love it! If you have a hook set like your fishing tarpon and like to pull them you will most likely be buying lots of jigs Good luck!!!

i use 3-4 pound test. i would think 1lb would be too light of line to use. :icefish:

I use 2 lb because I can't tie 1 lb and 3 is too heavy on the noodle rod.

I tried 1 pound test once but it was way to light for me. I would break it tying on a jig.

I like the 1# but I must be getting old and its hard for me to see the line to tie, Love 2# HiVis green use that almost exclusively.  I did get some 1# fireline just last week, fished once with it, like it so far, but thats a whole other topic somewhere on this forum ;)

The lightest line needed sometimes 4lb works great other times got to go to 2lb but no need to ever go lower least not for me catch as many if not more big ones then my buddy's using 1lb.

It's not always about #test but it's more about the actual line diameter.

I like 2# and under.  1# works fine IF you know how to fight a big fish with light line.

Thats right, compare lines .I like suffix lines, small diameter.Just got suffix  fusion yesterday 4# and only .004 thickness, dont know if I will like.My go to line is 4# suffix mono .007.I have used 2# regular trilene xl lately and like it also.
Still waiting for that huge crappie to land in my frying pan.

I use 2, 3, and sometimes 4# ... depending on where I'm fishing and what lures I have tied on. 1# is just too light for my preferences. My buddy uses the 1# a lot, but he gets his @$$ handed to him a lot, and loses many jigs and fish :'(. Panfish locations around here typically hold large bass as well, so using 1# won't do since they will, and do, hit my tiny jigs.

4 pound berkley trilene xl is working good for me, i talked to a guide fisherman and he says that the ice line is much weaker because of what they do to it to make ice resistant and such. he had a hole bag of ice armor but all his rods had 4# trilene xl on them

it does seem weaker now that you mention it
