lake winnisquam ice report
« on: Feb 10, 2016, 04:03 PM »
hey all, drove around the lake during my fishing adventures. the lake was snow covered for the first time this season. as you drive along the western shore, it gives a complete view. there are wet spots in various locations on the lake.
It's a great sign but has a ways to go before it's safe to walk out on. perhaps with these calm nights and the Arctic blast this weekend, things will be better. Yesterday the lake was wide open so don't be deceived by the snow cover. one hit of the spud bar and right thru you'll go .don;t be in a rush to get out there.

Be careful. Snow conceals.
Is it sometimes a fish being caught or you?

Hopeful that they freeze safely to fish, however historically speaking and based upon factual 2ft/5ft and 10ft water temps dictate that the water temps are rising, this process cannot be safely reversed to make safe ice....sorry to be the spoiler. Be Safe!

Went out today to check a few spots north of the bridge......1st spot checked was one that held ice thru the warm spell, south of the main body of the lake. Was shocked to see there was 3 holes freshly drilled from earlier in the day so checked the thickness
It was 5 inches of cap white ice. About 4 good pokes of a chisel and went thru. Walked out to the 2nd hole..still 5 inches of ice but 1 poke of the chisel and It went thru. Turned right around and carefully walked back. There was another hole further out but I wasn't walking out there.

2nd stop was Sanbornton beach to check the newly formed ice. Since Wednesday it's produced 2.5 to 3in of solid black ice. It all withheld 4 to 5 hits of a chisel. Didn't venture out far but was pleased with the progess.

Please be careful all. Just because some spots held thru the warm spell don't mean it's safe. That white ice sucks

just north of sanbornton beach, decent 4" of uniform ice.all the wet seams in the ice have hardened. I feel comfortable to be able to walk most anywhere on the northern third of the lake now

Awesome! Next 2 days hopefully will add some. Tuesday should get rid of a lot of the fluffy snow. Hopefully with 10 days of night Temps below freezing it will all come together for a safe derby weekend

ice grew to 6" in the area I fish.

Ahearn state park is froze, decent ice in the shallows. Be advised that there is a small pressure ridge 100-150 yards straight off the beach, one hit of the spud bar and went right thru
