100:1 or 50:1 Amsoil?
« on: Dec 20, 2007, 10:58 AM »
I have a 20 year old Jiffy auger & wanted to start running the Amsoil Saber in it.  I was just curious what ratio others use & what the differences are?

I'm kinda curious too. I have an older 2 cycle auger and have been considering the switch to a synthetic oil. Any advice would be helpful.

Many of the guys using Amsoil are mixing it at 80:1  or 100:1. I am using 80:1 in everything. So far no problems. There has been much discussion on this subject. Do a search and you should be able to bring up everything you need to know.

I use Sabre at 32:1 or 40:1 in everything aircooled.

My 100:1 Yamaha gets Sabre outboard at 75:1, the mechanic recommended running a little more oil than 100:1.

Do these mixes eliminate smoke from the exhaust?

Amsoil in general reduces smoke compared to other oils.

2-strokes are supposed to smoke. ;)

This is against amsoil recommendations. If you are going to mix it up thick, go get the cheap stuff. If you mix at 80:1, there will be less smoke and more power. Amsoil reccomends 100:1 in everything, I thought I was a worry wart mixing 80:1!

Read through this thread, it is top notch info on the subject. ;)

A few IS members have called amsoil and spoke with an engineer. The best I can explain is that there is more lube in Amsoil mixed at 100:1 than other oils can offer at any mix!

One of my other hobbies is large scale gasoline r/c boats. Those guys run 23cc-25cc engines with around 6hp. The majority of them race with 86-87 octane mixed with 8-9oz. oil per gallon of gas, they use Amsoil, HP2 and etc.

I have been running at richer ratios for years with no trouble and thats what I'm going to continue to run. Lubing the topend isn't the only concern with a 2-stroke. You need adequate oil to get down to the bottom end to lube the bearings. In air-cooled engines this is especially important due to the elevated temps.

50:1 and you'll never have a problem.  Older engines have a different style "ring" on their piston so if you go to 50:1 versus 25:1 you'll be fine. The newer oil are much better than the older ones and even at 1/2 the ratio of older oils you'll get better lubrication. ;D

it says 100:1 so thats what i run all my 2 cycle stuff at. if your motor blows because of the oil amsoil will replace it...period

I put 100 to 1 in my auger (strikemaster lazer mag) and it never ran better. It also does not have oil coming out of  the muffler now. It used to ooze out and I constantly had to carry a rag to wipe it clean. If you did not and you layed it on your shanty, you got oil on your fabric.    Go for it!

I've been running Amsoil at 100:1 from the very first tank of gas in my new Jiffy 30, 1 season on the ice and no problems yet.

Ive been running 50:1 amsoil saber professional in my new Strikemaster Lazer Mag Xpress and i will say that i have actually been having some oil coming out of the muffler and a little bit of smoke coming out.  It isnt nearly as bad as when i was running strikemaster oil at 24:1 but there is still some coming out.  I figure next year when i mix a new batch up i might run it at 70:1 or so and then see if i still have the same problem.

I have the same auger approx. 4 years old and I did the same thing that you are doing with the ratios of Amsoil. I am now at 100:1 with no smoke and hardly any oil residue from the exhaust. After a whole day of drilling I wipe the exhaust one time before I put the auger on the sled. You will also see a few more rpms.
Good luck!

Picked up some Amsoil this winter for my Nils.  I'm running it at 100:1.  If my engine craps out, I figure they bought me a new drill.  Although to be honest, to put that kind of a claim out there, I'm betting that everything will be better than okay...plus, no smoke, no drip and higher rpms.
