I spear out of a Eskimo Quick Fish 3.  Before that it was a 4'x8' Northlander by Canvas Craft.  I like the Quick Fish 3 better.

 I've been using portables exclusively since arriving in AK.  Most of the places I fish are not road accessable and gear has to be hauled in by snowmachine.  I use a Frabill Outback model, and before that an old Shapell (blue tarp looking cover).  Both worked fine, the Shapell was much heavier tho as it had a wooden floor.  The Frabill is much lighter, but has a small design flaw in my opinion.  I've had the telescoping frame and spring button locks freeze up and have hard time getting them apart on occasion.  I really like the Quick Fish models like darkhousefisher uses, and in hindsight should've got one of those.

You can spear out of pretty much any kind of portable shanty. As long as the holes are big enough and you can spear through them. That is the main factor you need to take into account.

True but, the QuickFish have no floor, so ya can cut the hole as big as ya like ;D.  I did have to modify my Frabill tho, (and my old Shapell)  Nothing a jig saw couldn't fix. The Frabill had a thin plastic floor, so I just started at the hole already there, and made it square.  I guess if you have the nerve to cut up a perfectly good, new, portable shanty, then you must be some kind of darkhouse spearing addict ::)??

Higgins;

There was a fellow back in the late 60's that had a wood portable.
He used it on the Conservation Club end of Muskegon Lake.
It was made with 1/4" plywood, 2x2's and piano hinges.
The upside down top had the skis on it.
I remember 2 of the sides had a piano hinge as well as corner hinges to fold flat and be 4' wide.
The shanty was 4'X4' and 5'-6' tall.
The floor, lid and walls all hooked together with old fashioned screen doors hooks.
