Other than cascade, are there any other lakes in the panhandle that produce perch of a true jumbo status? Are there any walleyes in the panhandle?

Cascade is not really in the panhandle. It's a few hours drive from CDA but I've heard of good sized perch out of Pend  Orielle (walleye too if you can find them) but good luck ice fishing it.

I just ordered new blades for the auger, rainy day in the Panhandle, if we get a "normal winter" or colder Dec will be looking good.

I stopped by round lake this afternoon to check it out as I have it been there in a long time. I got a new flasher and was thinking about playing with it off of a dock somewhere this weekend. Does anyone have an idea how deep the water might be off the end of the docks? Also on the way out I saw a whopper whitetail buck walking out of the visitor center.

Howdy CMS, It's twentish feet deep off those docks.

And, there are usually enough fish moving through to get excited about.     ;)2

Good luck with the new flasher.

Great to hear, I know what I'm doing this weekend. I was thinking about trying bayview docks down by the captains wheel but figured it'd be windy.

Thanks for the info,
Casey

You're welcome Casey.   Glad I could share the info.

Er, um, fishing is allowed, ha. Never know what you might catch there.     ;)2

Single hook, piece of worm, 10' down or bottom for perch.

It was a lot of fun learning the new flasher. Caught a couple nice trout to boot. I can see how it's going to be fun watching the screen.

You mentioned two places ~ where'd you go Casey?     ???

Nice trout?   My ruler doesn't have nice on it, ha.   But, a 10"er is an eater.    ;)2

I went to round lake. Got there about 7:30 and fished until 10:30. The bigger of the two was 13" and the other was 10". We had a few get off at the surface and a couple hit and runs. There is some strange algae that is floating that I've never seen before. We also saw another whopper buck just west of vay on the way over. Crazy I was more excited to go fishing than look at a deer.

Wow!  Those 13" and up pull good.    ;)2

A hint ~  when they tap at it give them about a foot of slack and a few seconds = fewer misses and they don't come off so easily.    Took me a while to figure that one, ha.

I set a rod over a bucket and had a 15 1/2" double the rod, ha.

Good luck...

Tom

Thanks Tom, I'll keep that in mind next time. It was just fun watching the mark get up to my mark and a second later my rod would be getting hit.

Looks like some favorable temps are on the way!!  Check out the weather service link:

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/FXC/wxstory.php?wfo=otx&full=yes&iname=WeatherStory3.png

Highs in the low-mid 20's next week!  If it does happen....be careful as we need to make sure the ice is good and hard.  First ice is great fishing but don't rush it or take any chances!

Keep your fingers crossed.  Looks like a cold snap coming next week.  Supposed to get down into the teens or lower.   Lets hope.

I really like the forecast next week and hope they are right about it.  Colder temps with no snow.  It seems like when we get that initial 1-2" of ice followed by 3-4" of wet snow we end up with a winter of so-so ice and lots of slush layers.  If we can get a few days of cold and no "blanket" on top of it we'll end up with a thicker base to start things off.

Here is how I like to fish early ice, even when it is 4 inch clear ice, I bring phillips screwdrivers on a lanyard, I have an inflatable life vest on, I always fish with a buddy and we bring some rope.  I always start with test holes near shore.  I helps to know your lake and how it freezes up be careful around muskrat houses and any springs.  I wear ice cleats as new ice is very slippery.  I had a buddy walk out just to check ice without his cleats and he got a concussion.  This is nothing new to a lot of us who have been doing this for years, but anyone new to the sport stay safe.

Oops, I posted a few days ago about ice auger sharpening services. Looks like the "Cutting Edge" may be out of business. I talked to Tony from "BLADES" #6 3655 N. Gov't Way in Cd'A 208-818-1836 and he says he can sharpen them.

Yesterday Morton slough had some spots starting, the little body of water on the west side of 95 and just north of dufort was capped but doubt it was very thick. I wish the water was as hard as the ground, I had to dig a trench today and there was 6" of frost as hard as concrete.
