March Ice?
« on: Jan 26, 2007, 06:47 PM »
I'm from Western New York and have a buddy going to trade school in Wisconsin.  A bunch of us are thinking of taking a trip to visit in March (around the 10th).  We all love icefishing and have herd great things about your Walleye fishing.  Do you still have safe ice in March? and if there is walleye still open?

We usually have ice in early March.  The lake I am fishing on has a solid 18".  I don't see it leaving anytime soon.  Shawano lake has good panfish (45 min west of Green Bay), and Lake Onalaska (west side by LaCrosse) is known for panfish.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info, sounds like the ice will still be good in March.  I went out today here in NewYork, we only have 4" of ice. Lots of bluegills but only eight keepers.

Sunburn, another web site that is pretty good for knowing ice conditions is Lake-Link.com.  Guys are pretty good for indicating ice conditions especially for first and late ice.  Let mw know if you need any help.  I was out today on a small lake in southeast Wisc.  App. 45 acre lake and it had app. 8" of ice.  Colder than crap.... -18F wind chill...winds were whipping in the 20 - 28mph range.  Wow, feels good to be having a cocktail with a warm laptop on the lap!

Sunburn,

Just FYI, gamefish (walleye, bass, pike) are closed after the first of March.  Panfish (bluegill, crappie, perch) are fair game though.

Thanks again for the input guys, I guess your game fish season closes earlier than ours (March 15), but it doesn't matter because we mostly fish for panfish anyhow.
