I thought we might as well start discussing plans for a derby. (Optimist)

I was thinking we play it safe and shoot for mid to the end of February.

I was thinking Lake Hoipatcong again ... being it has parking and is centrally located.

Chime in with your thoughts/comments.

maybe we can look at other lakes to like Cranberry Lake, Twin Lakes , Lake Aeroflex , Or lake Lliff. All the lakes have a lot of parking & can hold a lot of guys & girl's. Something to think about

I'm up for anything you guys would like to do. Only two conditions.

1 is safe ice.
2 is ample parking.

Is there such a thing as ample parking anywhere else then the state park at LH ? I know by the River Styx there is a marina where you can park.

The State Park definitely would be the spot. Im not sure if River Styx has enough parking if there is a really big turnout.

Doug,
What would you say is good ice like for this outting . I say 6 + inches should be good .Last time we had it at River Styx.We all parked at Johnny's .
Now Cranberry Lake there is a lot of parking by the state boat ramp & more parking by RT 206 & the Adam Todd, Twin Lakes There is parking for about 20 truck in the first lot & there is parking for more 60 car's in the next lot , Lake Aeroflex will hold parking for more 50+ cars , Or lake Lliff has parking for 40 + cars
As for the ice it's is better to be safe then sorry.Cranberry Lake, Twin Lakes , Lake Aeroflex , lake Lliff are on or off RT 206

Shawn it has to be a minimum of 6" to hold a derby. I'd say ample parking for 40-50 vehicles should be fine. We have to keep in mind even if we only have 30 vehicles there may be other ice fisherman as well.

What Sat are you looking at in Feb 10,17,24 the THE KNEE DEEP is having there contest on Sunday the 18th. If we can get it in lets do it ASAP before we have no ice.

That is why I said let do it Feb 10,17,24.We should have 6+ inch by Feb 10 with this nice cold front coming in this week & next week

the 10th is last day of permit shot gun you will have a bigger turn out if its after the 10th and some guys have work on saturday so i think sundays are a better choice

Sorry to say if you have to wait until the last day to get a deer its time to stop hunting.

The last time we had it Sat is the best day & we had a great turn out. Sun guys & girls have church & family things to do. I would say again it will be on a Sat but that is up to everyone

Yes Sat is better-- for all the reasons you mentioned. I think early Feb is a little aggressive for 6" though, the later available dates should
be better.

The early Feb day is not that aggressive look at accuweather . The 10th or 17 can be done. Before we lose this ice. We might have to do it on 6 to 7 inches of ice we might not get that good 8 to 10 inches this year.But I hope we do

Did you guys pick which lake to have the Derby at yet? Hopefully there will be decent ice at the lakes you were considering by the first or second week of Feb.

as of 1/25 hopatcong has 4-5" on it in the coves....main lake is still open though. not sure how big of a roll that will play in it, but yeah. just thought i'd let yall know.

I'd say the 17th or 24th would give us plenty of time for ice making as well as planning.

As for lake/location it will depend on ice thickness as well as parking.
