Ice formation formula
« on: Jan 06, 2004, 08:57 AM »
I read somewhere in the past that it takes 24 hours to make 1 inch of ice, as long as there is no snow on the lake. Has anyone else heard or read this? Just wondering if it's true!

I think the outside temperature must have to figure in there somewhere. I know the lake on my property seems to take longer to make ice when it is 31 degrees as compared to -40 degrees.

My experience has always been that with nights in the teens/20's, and days just below freezing, can put on about 1 " a day

I'm not so sure I'd agree with that formula ::). The reason being is that, it doesn't mention anything about the depth of the water or the "size" of the body of water.   Ever notice how shallower lakes, freeze quicker? And, how smaller lakes freeze quicker?? ::)

I also heard the theory about how we can get 1" a day. I don't exactly know if it is true I'm sure on a smaller body of water that isn't extreamly deep that you could get it but with a bigger body I'm not to sure.

The snow doesn't let that "ice cold" air blow, on top of the ice, the snow acts as an "insulator" of sorts. Which brings into account another factor,,, the wind, ::) If you ever see a show on the Discovery Channel called "Ice Roads", WATCH IT!! Its pretty good, these guys drive semi trucks on the ice,,, loaded with CONCRETE, GAS and all sorts of stuff. They mention in the show, that they always have to plow the "roads" to keep the snow off,,, that way the cold wind blows on the ice and makes more ice quicker.

ive watched that iceroads numerous times, it looks so scary, yet exciting to do it. If i were there i would end up parking my rig and drilling some holes tho, just imagine allthe monster trout lurking in those unfished ponds in the wilderness!
