marcum vx1 pro

Im looking at a marcum vx1 pro
does anyone know can it work
by putting the transducer on the ice or do you
have to drill a hole.

Is this a good unit cabelas has a sale.

Im using a fishing buddy 1001 and
I drill a hole for it.

Last time out it had rained the night before we went out slush on top of the ice about three inches I had no problem in most spots shooting through.Yes I do have a VX1 and love it for the price.

Do you know how many inches of ice it will shoot through?
Do the more expensive ones shoot through more ice?
