i know it is off season but i would look at yard sales etc for old school homemade ones. i found one that was made in an old railroad metal shop. they really knew how to make stuff back then.

I like the 53" ones 4-6 lbs ...one piece ...will fit in a 2 man ...light enough to carry out every time but heavy enough to get the job done..one piece no moving part ..or pieces to lose.   Cabelas brand ..Mills Fleet brand ...Eskimo brand all make a one piece.

I used to make them from 3/4 " Re-rod (concrete reinforcing rod) If you have access to a welder this is fairly easy.the blade was about 8 x 2x3/4 " welded to the re rod.The hardest part was grinding the blade angle, the longer the angle the better

I have a Mille Lacs one piece with tapered blade. I can pop easily through an inch plus of ice.
Rapala now makes one. Dicks Sporting goods and some of the bigger bait shops
should have an option if not call Reeds sporting goods in MN.

The Mille Lacs is pretty nice.  The blade really bites into the ice efficiently.
