MDI bait shops
« on: Jan 07, 2014, 03:09 PM »
I'm looking for live bait in the MDI area.
Anyone know a bait shop there?

There's a guy down behind Kebo in Bar Harbor that sells shiners (PM me if you want his name) or you can get bait (emeralds right now, goldens and suckers to come) in Trenton at Poseidon as you roll toward the island.  Richard ("Rat") is no longer selling bait unless things have changed very recently.

Two places. R.A.T’s (“Grumpy”)  in Town Hill and Jordan River Bait in Lamoine. I’ll give ya better info later.

Richard and Rusty (R.A.T's) have closed their bait shop.

Thanks for all the info.  I was down in Northeast Harbor yesterday for my daughters bball game.  He had good bait.  I'll check out the other spots today or tomorrow.  There's great ice on the island - now I'll start exploring!  It's beautiful here but I can't wait to get back to Belgrade next week!

Any smelts available anywhere between Ellsworth and Banga ? Or on the island ?
If not I would buy at Dags or in Augusta....

I too am working on fishing MDI next weekend myself......
Probably stay in Ellsworth next Thursday night and might be looking for a new friend  ;D ;D to fish with next Friday morning.... not meeting my brother in BH until Friday night.

I have all the gear.... would be cool to find some crappie or trout or salmon.

There's no crappie on MDI, but numerous lakes and ponds have trout/salmon.

Trout and salmon it would be.
Are they "smelt happy" trout and salmon ?
Or do shiners do well enough to forget about smelts ?

My gut says bring smelts  ;D

I always use smelts for salmon if I can get them. Emerald shiners are the next best bait to smelts for salmon. Good luck!

O'Neils right off of 395 on 1A has smelts though if you are coming up 95 I would stop in Oakland and get them there.  Right off the highway and really good condition.  I forget the name of the place but they bag them and they travel well.  I load up there whenever I am going through and hold them at my house for extended periods of time with very little loss.  I'm not saying don't go to the other spots I'm just saying that this works for me to get bait to Ellsworth.

O'neils in Brewer, right where you get on the Bangor Road and head south towards Ellsworth.  I want to say the place in Oakland is Fisherman's Choice?  Maybe Wild Things? Real easy off easy on spot from 95 and I want to say it's on Rt 27?  Check the bait dealers section on the Maine page.
