Fishing With Long Rods
« on: Jan 03, 2014, 08:12 AM »
I have seen this technique used on the ice, I'm just looking for anyone else that fishes long rods while ice fishing and any info you could provide. Many guys I've talked to swear by them! Thanks!

by long are we talking 30in or 5ft+? I know guys that fish the miss backwaters and use 3-4 "jiggler" rods. But the reason for doing this is they are fishing super shallow and at times have to stand back away from the hole to avoid spooking fish.

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

some people also use longrods in deep water to provide more backbone and leverage on the fish to hold a tightline while pulling them to the ice

What about long rods with the line running through the center of the rod?

I think those are micro fishing rods, the ones that have line going through the center. The amount of line is equal to the length of the pole, so usually between 6 and 7 feet of line. They are used mainly for panfish and other small, shallow water fish. Not sure why someone would use one ice fishing though.

They are the ticket for pressured fish in the shallows, I have seen guys use long rods around here and dominate over the guys using normal rods. I'm convinced theres a time and place for a rod like icerookie pointed out, in fact I have one ordered should be here soon....

I've never used a rod on ice bigger than 38" that I use for pike and walleyes
Never to many short poles

Jumbo, for early/late season gills and crappies I have seen guys roaming hole to hole with long rods and out catch those of us with short rods in the same holes....

If you are cruising hole to hole, long rods are nice. I have no idea why though, but they seem to work better.
