Pike Cleaning Video
« on: Oct 29, 2005, 07:54 PM »
I was surfing around trying to find a good step by step guide to cleaning Northern Pike and I found this video someone had posted elsewhere.  I found it very helpful.

I have to say, i've seen pike done a few ways, but never like this. Interesting.

interesting......looks like I'll have to post a video on what my method is.....in the time it takes them to get 5 pieces, I can probably do at least 2 fish....but nonetheless....still a great video....Grump

That is an interesting way to fillet them but it looks very easy and effective.

I do them grumps' way too. I'd have to imagine that this method might be more effective for a smaller pike. A big one, I go grump-filleting hands down.

i think maybe if you've got a limit of pike to fillet, that might be the way to go, but I usually catch only 1 or 2, generally smaller ones, and take my time filletting them.  There seemed to be a lot of meat left in the square chunk around the backbone in the video.  I use the method Grump posted for boneless fillets.

I tried this yesterday. I have to say, i think if your NOT an absolute pro with a fillet knife, this is the way to go. Fast, and my fillets didnt come out looking like shredded wheat.

I agree, just taking the Y bone out is the easyest way to filet from my experience and the meat that comes with the Y bone can be used for herrings, so nothing goes to waste !!
