what brand rattle reel?
« on: Jan 31, 2010, 06:27 PM »
hey guys, I want to get a few rattle reels for the shack. I would like to get the type with a wing nut so that when a fish grabs it and runs it will automatically loosen the wingnut and free spool. Or are there other types that will free spool when a fish hits it? thanks-tl

I just bought a cheapo one that I can set just tight enough to hold the bait in place, but will still spin free when a fish hits.

I think there's a spring washer on there so you can adjust the spool tightness pretty easily.

I got mine at Fleet Farm.  They were a couple of $$ each.

There are a couple of styles, they have hinged ones that you can screw right to the wall.

I put one of those large paper clamps on mine so I can clamp it to the pole in my portable shack.

Here's a pic :

Hope this helps,

Yes.  There is a wingnut on it.  I set it to the depth I want and adjust the wingnut just enough to keep the minnow from being able to pull line.

when a fish hits and takes off, the wing nut loosens and the reel freespools.

Just make sure that when you put the line on it is the right direction.  Otherwise pulling line will tighten the wingnut and the fish will feel resistance.

I have caught perch, trout, walleye, and crappie on the rattle reel pictured.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

The Lewandowski reels use a rubber grommet to set your spool tension and is very free-wheeling when a fish strikes. I prefer them over the ones with wing nut and have never had a problem with them
