Hit the bay today.
« on: Dec 27, 2018, 04:52 PM »
Had a few hours to kill, picked up my 12 Y/O brother in law, and headed to St. Albans bay to try and get some perch for dinner. Bite was fast, one after another....all tiny, and I mean tiny.

Tried out my new auger on the Milwaukee, worked great! Right untill it came out of the chuck and fell to the bottom in 14’ of water.....

So we ran up to the house and the hardware store and got some supplies. Some rope and a big magnet, and threw the 6” on the drill Incase is drifted on way or another on the way down.

Sent the magnet down the hole and got it first try! Had to get my arm wet, but it came back up topside.

Worst part is I knew better than to run it without some kind of safety piece on it...the 6” has one. I’m a dummy.

But the kid had a blast, so it was a good day.

I don’t have a safety device on mine. I also use the same drill as you. You just have to check it and tighten it for the first 2 or 3 holes and it’s good all day.

I do. Been running a 6” in the drill for a few years, never had an issue with it coming out. Just have check better I guess.

That’s wierd. once I check mine the first time I haven’t had any issue. Must be a fluke thing

Yeah, my buddy has one. Doesn’t clear shavings, but floating is good.

look at it as a test run. no fish to clean and you got your auger back.

Glad you got it back. I use a Dewalt drill and had a 16" adapter machined to screw into the threaded spindle that held the chuck. The other end is machined to hook up to a fin bore auger just like how it hooks to it's handle. Works great and can't come loose. I can change out to 4 1/2", 6" or even 8".

Had between 5-7 inches across most of the bay, before this warm weather and rain today.

That's a good idea, just talked to the sales rep at work this morning, apparently if you tighten the drill chuck all the way down, then turn it back one click it locks the chuck so it cant loosen up. He said its in the owners manual of all the major drill manufacturers but he very rarely meets anyone who knows that trick. its like putting the chuck in neutral so it physically cant loosen or tighten any while drilling.
