Largest Lake Trout.
« on: Nov 07, 2005, 01:27 PM »
Hi everyone I though I would share some info I have found on the largest lake trout.
The largest lake trout I have ever heard of was 102lbs{43.6kg}. This giant was caughtt by a commercial fishery, and was caugh in northern Sask. I my self have seen the skin mount of the fish, it has a deep distended belly, and was in the museum of natural history in Regina, unfortunately there was a fire at the museum and I am not sure if the fish was lost.

I thought the world record lake trout came out of Great Bear Lake in Northern Alberta?

That is the recognized world record and yep, it came out of great bear. My grandparents tell us stories about 100 pound lakers they used to catch out of Takla and Babine lakes all the time. Back in the 40's and 50's they said the average laker from Takla was 50 or 60 pounds. And I've seen pictures to prove it!! They always told us that 100 lbs was not uncommon.

couldnt fit that thru a 9in. hole! would need to cut 4 holes in a square and chisel out the center. what the heck would you use for bait? 2lb whitefish would probably work! LOL!

amazing dont do those fish justice bigred... man they def get the blood pumping...

ya know a lake the size of the King with all of the available forage has to have some monsters like that lurking in the depths....
maybe we should manufacture some bigger better tipups and find those fatties
bigger spools, heavier line, heavy base etc etc etc

I was thinking maybe droppin a couple 12" suckers out on tipups this year

yeeeeeeehaaaaaaaa

maybe canada lake will freeze up quick and we can get some laker practice in

I am pretty sure that was the fish, that was in the museum. It had a giant belly on it, really distended, and it was from Lake Athabasca.
Our Sask. record Northern pike also came from that lake at 42 lbs 12oz in 1954.
Some might big fish swim those waters.

Hey all

I guide at Tazin lake, Northwestern, Sask.  along the Northwest Territories, Alberta and Saskatchewan borders

Checkout our website www.tazinlakelodge.com

We caught a 70 + pound laker there this past summer and alot of other 30 to 50 lbers

This was the first full year of operation for us.

Just wait till this summer, hopefully gonna shatter it

The world record laker officiallyWeighs in at 72 lbs

Others larger have supposedly been caught but never officially notorized

A big Laker fights like no other freshwater fish.  HOLD ON TO YOUR ROD.   YEAHHHH

you would need to create a hole 3' X 3' and back the truck up to it and send down a 2ton winch in order to pull those through the ice. no way would they come up on reg rigging
fishing = paradise

Heres a nice one through the ice. I had it on here a couple years ago.   I am holding it in this pic, but my buddy caught it, I did take him out to a good spot that day though,  ;D.    42 inches, weight unknown,  I do know it barely sqeezed through a 10 inch hole, I remember kneeling by the hole to grab it when it came through and the 4 ft of water in the hole had no where to go but straight up, soaking me.  Which means a girth of around 30 inches.   Its a poor quality pic, scanned.   Any estimates on the weight Natwild?

I love that pic!  the head on that fish is just unbelieveable.  I can understand why they get so big, they can eat a 10 lb whitefish no problem!

Beautiful Fish, That must of been some fight. Caught on a rod or tipup?

The Conversion scale for released fish for a general weight,  This doen't take into account how the fish carry's it weight for girth ie. if it has girth all the way down or just in one spot.

length x girth x girth divided by 800 = apoximate weight of fish

42 x 30 x 30 divided by 800 = 47 pounds

The girth looks to be in the 27 inch range(from the pic) but like you said a picture can make it look many different sizes.  I have 3 pics of a 50" pike that make it look like a 35 lber a 30 lber and a 25 lber.  it weighed 32 lbs.

42 x 27 x 27 div 800 = 38 lbs

from the pic it looks to me to be a 35 to 40 lber.

Athapap fish? or?

I never caught any big ones ice fishing yet but am heading up to build cabins soon so i may get some time in yet this season( open till April 15 in the north zone)
I'll post on and let you Know how it goes.
I'll be posting this summer on myfishfinder some of our lodge pics.  check em out  :) ;) :D ;D 8) :-*

Thanks Natwild,  I was thinking around 40 pounds, and have showed it to a few other guides that have seen lots of big lakers and they've said the same too.    I had lost one the day before on the rod about that size, fought it for a solid half hour, but it eventually straighted out the small jig I was using.  I had just downsized from a big jig, just to catch a small one at least and in a couple minutes hooked a big pig, go figure!  I had it to the ice about 6 times and every time it would easily rip the line out back to bottom.  That is still the longest I have ever fought a fish and even though I didn't land that one I did get to see it a couple times at least and it was around the same size, maybe even the same fish.  Going there again in a couple weeks, hopefully have some pics of another one that size or bigger.

I will definately be on myfishfinder too checking out the pics.  I too guide at a fly-in lodge, strickly trophy pike fishing though, no lakers.  Some day I may have to go guide at a lake like the one you're at with huge lakers and pike as well.
