border regulations on transporting fish
« on: Jan 27, 2013, 06:20 PM »
ive looked and i cant find what im looking for(maybe i missed it?).  my question is, how many perch can i bring from Canada to the U.S.?  planning on heading to Lake Simcoe for the first time soon with a few friends and dont want or need any delays or trouble.  I have a sportsmans license and will be there a few days.  also, any other things i should know about transporting them.  Thanks in advance.
Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day.  But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

that helps, but i was looking more for numbers. the perch limit is 50 daily and 100 in possession on Simcoe correct?  so does that mean i can transport 100 back across the border to the U.S.?

If your here for longer then two days then I would say that would be correct. yes it is 50 per day and 100 possession for Simcoe just checked the regs. Also if you still not sure you could always call your border agents and ask before you leave just to make sure.

heres the regs for Simcoe

Yes you can take 100 perch back with just remember one person can only have 50 per day on the ice.

Keep in mind that the fish have to be packaged so that the number and species of fish can be determined. If you clean them before transport home leave some skin on each filet so species can be recognized. If you show up with a big bag of frozen whole fish or filets all frozen together so they can't tell numbers or species you may be there until they thaw. ;)

To my understanding your catch and possession for Simcoe is the same so legally you can have a daily limit on you, including your car, cooler, freezer...  In NYS 2 days limit is legal to transport. I am not sure how aggressive they are in Canada, but Ive heard stories of mnr officers stopping and searching cars. Anybody else has any knowledge/ experience, especially our Canadian members?
