Moldy boots - HELP
« on: Jan 20, 2007, 07:41 PM »
Now that we finally got a little cold weather and some ice here in MA , I was preparing my gear for maybe going out tomorrow  ;)2and to my horror  :%$#!:- my wife had stored my boots last yr in a plastic bag in the basement :cookoo: and now they are green and furry . Can they be fixed? Should I replace the boots? My wife? Anyway I will be going out, just with 2 prs of socks! ;)

Looks to me like you should have taken care of your boots yourself.

This doesn't sound good....Is it just the liners or the inside of the boots also? The liners can be replaced easy enough...The only effective means for killing mold that I can think of is bleach....I am not sure I would want to use bleach on my boots...Sorry, not much help...If the boots had been dried prior to putting them in a plastic bag, the results would have been ok.

Which would be cheaper to replace, your boots or your wife? JK

put the boots in a five gallon bucket with some bleach/water cover them and let it sit overnight. dont use to much bleach as it will ruin the boots after that wash them out with warm water. if they still smell moldy, place boots in a five gal bucket with a lid and pour some vinegar in a bowl and put it in with the boots(in the bowl not on the boots) cover and let sit for a day or two that should kill any residual smell if their is any.(this vinegar trick works well with anything you want to get the smell out of) then dry the boots next to a heater or with the wifes hair dryer seeing as its her fault to begin with lol.

I Googled "How to remove mold from boots" and one site said to scrub them with mild soapy water and Fabreeze and then dry them good. Wash the liners with Woolite and dry them.Baking soda will also remove the smell.

Has the rain a father?
Or who has begotten the drops of dew?
From whose womb comes the ice?
And the frost from heaven, who gives it birth?
By the breath of God ice is given and the broad waters are frozen.
The waters harden like stone and the surface of the deep is frozen.

Found my old combat boots the garage after a 10 yr hiatus--all moldy.  Just brushed off and wore them as an experiment, had no prob.  Mold smell was gone quickly, & they hadn't  gotten any lighter.

If you have, or know someone who has an air purifier that puts ozone into the air, it will kill the mold and mildew. I would put them in a box with the air purifier blowing into it on its highest setting. After that a minor cleanup and you're all set.

I would do the bleach thing in a bucket and then dry them good. After dry put them in a garbage bag and throw them out!!!! No just kidding. Put the garbage bag in a chest freezer for a few days. Even outside if below freezing. I did this and it works. It may take a second time in the freezer but it works. I run and my tennis shoes get wet and I do not dry them right. This is the best way to stop the funk!!!

Good luck.

No need to throw anything away !
Just wash the boots in a mild " HUNTING DETERGENT " to remove the odor and mold then put them on a Pete's Boot Dryer . My son had the same problem once and this was suggested and done .... it works well !
The boot dryer works on a convection type heat and will slowly but steadily dry the boot .
This same process works for those smelly shoes your wife makes you leave outside .

I guess mold and mildew can not grow under a certain temperature. Not sure what that is but it does work. I would also put them in a plastic bag so as not to bouger up your wifes rump roast! I have a friend who told me this was going to be a very bad flu and sinus season because of the warm winter. He claims that we need the cold weather to keep mold spores down. Whenever it is unseasonably warm they see a dramatic increase in these conditions in the doctors office. I can not argue but it does make sense.

ditch them!! get a new pair and get yourself a boot dryer. you will never have that happen again, as for the wife, do what I do tell her to stay away. If something is sitting around it sitting around for a reason ;)
