that is an inland silverside closely related to the atlantic silverside, they stay very close to the waters surface, or ice in this case, notice the mouth is pointed up its because the feed on the surface.
Yes, officially named a "Brook Silverside". Common bait fish in upstate NY. Short lifespan and don't do well in captivity.Need to use that ichthyology degree of mine every now and then.
ugh i meant brook silverside haha for some reason in my head i always mix the two up. Same here with the degree!
the brook silverside has 2 dorsal fins this bait fish has one https://nas.er.usgs.gov/queries/FactSheet.aspx?SpeciesID=318you can clearly see this also the head is shaped differentbut i am changeing my mind on it being a emerald shiner because that dorsal fin is back to far after careful examination and google 4 heinekens i have determined this is a emerald shiner brook silverside spearing hybrid ......... end of story
