first eelpout
« on: Feb 23, 2008, 10:12 PM »
first of all I would like to thank everyone here for the VERy helpful info on eelpout fishing. I got out last night for my first time ever fishing for them. at 7:20 I landed my first one and got one every half hour after that on both tipup, and jigging rod with most of them comming on a red lindy flier jig tipped with a shiner, they loved the glow every time i would recharge it they would come flying in.

congrads I first heard about them here I want to go try to catch some of them.  Is it like cat fishing.  Good job.  By the way it looks like you are getting ready tying flies for the spring.  Preperation is the key to sucess.

Nice catch!

Are those the same thing as bowfin or dogfish?
Did you eat them?

CP13 got this one.
The correct statement would be "BURBOT, ling, and eelpout are all the same"

BURBOT

BOWFIN

How to tell the difference
1. Bowfin has that dot or "eye" on the tail (like a peac0ck), Burbot don't
2. Burbot have that barbel (the one wisker hanging from the bottom of the chin), Bowfin don't
3. Bowfin have scales about like a crappie, Burbot are more like catfish (slimy with scales so small, they are almost indetectible)
4. Burbot have that V-shaped notch toward the front of their dorsal fin, Bowfin don't
5. Bowfin have teeth like a Northern Pike, Burbot have teeth like a bass
6. They are both good fighters, but Burbot are caught almost exclusively through the ice and Bowfins are caught almost exclusively in open water.
7. MOST IMPORTANTLY:  Burbot have delicious white meat, Bowfin have vile green meat
