blood worms

i know that one of the food groups for perch are blood worms, and i was wondering how does the blood worms work? is there a certain time of year they come out of the ground?  when are they most active, just looking for some general info on them.

Gord Pyzer has done articles in Out Door Canada and the In-Fishermen on ice fishing with bood worms Check those out
