First 2023 trip for me
« on: Feb 13, 2023, 08:53 AM »
Got out with my 3 year old boy for the first time this season.  Wifes work schedule, a 9 month old at home and the thin ice has got in the way this year.  Was hoping for a little more action.  We lost a medium size pickerel in the hole and pulled up a small yellow perch.  Didn't matter to him, he was all smiles after that fish.  He lasted over 2 hours before he wanted to call it a day.  I was hoping for longer.  Next time I'm going to bring more kids for him to play with.  I hope you all stay safe the rest of the year.  I'll probably get him out another time or two locally and I'm headed to Pittsburg in mid-March.  Will hopefully have some larger fish pictures to share after that trip.

Nice post.  Looks like he's hooked.

Little kids have a short attn span, so 2 hrs sounds about right.

More kids is a good idea....maybe a little mini football, too.
Snacks help, as well.  Hot cocoa & mini marshmallows is another easy 1.
If there's enough of you, might be worth hauling a coleman stove out there.

If you know of a place that produces lots of flags, then go there.  Kids don't care what they catch as long as the flags are flying.

Maybe a few of those ideas will buy you another 1 hr or so of ice time.

Good luck!

p.s. Don't forget the extra mittens!

Good luck on your future trips... but any larger fish you catch won't top that picture -it's awesome.

Jigmaster5's ideas are good ones... especially as he gets a bit older, miss watching the kids running for flags to catch dink fish and learn how to reset traps etc.

Congrats on an awesome two hours.

Thanks for all the nice responses and tips guys.  I always bring plenty of snacks with us.  I brought extra mittens too, but he refuses to wear them because he can't hold his dinosaurs and trucks.   His hands are in the shiner bucket half the time anyway. Headed out somewhere this Saturday but this time his mom is going to bring him to me after I have everything set up and his older cousin may come out so he will have a kid to play with.  Hope everyone is catching this week.
