Whats Happening on Houghton Lake
« on: Dec 18, 2007, 08:10 AM »
Lymans web site is saying 8-10 inches.

Anyone been out. Are there alot of sleds and quads going out?

I drove by Lymans yesterday and there was about a dozen Permanant shacks already out there. I didn't have time to stop and get a fishing report but they are definitely out there fishing. If I get back down there again this week, I'll stop and get the scoop...

I stopped by Lymans this morning and he says there is 8 inches of solid ice out behind his store. All there permanant shanties are out there including their 18 footer which has bunks in it. No reports of gills being caught but there have been pike and walleye iced. The walleye he said were from the east side of the lake - no specifics as to exactly where on the East side. Any how looks like Tip up town will have plenty of ice this year.

I drove by last Saturday and saw many shelters out.

I am from NY but am often now in Michigan. I drive by Houghton lake to get to the Mio area. Can anyone help me ans suggest a good area close to Mio that has pike and panfish?

Thanks,
Jon

Mio Pond always has pretty good fishing, depending on water level behind the dam.  Can't get much closer to town then that.  :)

Are you talking about what my fiance refers to as "The Backwaters" ?

I know the Dam well. I fihed that this summer a couple times and decent trout are in there. Some nice bass as well.

Thanks,
Jon

Well, we've always called the impoundments further upstream "The Backwaters" but sure.  It's just another impoundment of the AuSable River.  I've always called it Mio Pond or Mio Dam Pond.

Out towards Rose City on M33 is Loon Lake.  Decent fishing in the past there.

That is great info.

I see you are in West Branch. Maybe we can hook up at some point. I am actually in Mio this weekend for a few days but that is Christmas gathering time but I certainly know where West Branch is.

It's to bad I think Michigan only allows 1 or 2 tip ups. We are allowed 5 in NY.

I know the exact area you are speaking of now. I know exactly how to get over there as well.

Just talked with the fianace and she knows where Loon Lake is as well. I have drove 33 a lot and have never seen this, but then again I come in often when it is dark.

Thanks again.
Jon

I don't want to hijack this thread but....

NY = 5 Tip ups and 2 handlines / jig rods

We often times will go pike fishing with 3-5 people and put out the max which we end up doing really well for pike.
