Has anyone been out to the butte lately, and if so is there enough ice to fish on?

a buddy was out there around firearm season and said it was crusted and west end was froze over in the trees but have no idea since then

I doubt it's fishable yet.  Was out there right before Thanksgiving and had to bust through about 2" of ice, but it only went out to water about 2' deep.  I bet it will be another 2-3 weeks before I'd feel safe out there.  May check on it this weekend if I have time.

according to fishing's other post "first post of the season(smith & Box Butte)"  there is ice, but no thickness quote,  he said they were on it on friday.  but not much decent action.  he said smith was hitting pretty good though.

I'd try to find smaller bodies of water right now and head farther north in the state.  With the daytime highs what they are and have been lately I'd be very cautious about Box Butte right now.  You might find solid ice on the western part of the lake, but would be super cautious about trying Hunter's point or anything farther east.  I'll be driving by there to Scottsbluff tomorrow (moving to SB) and if I have a few extra minutes I'll drive by and see what things are like.

The sooner that place has enough ice to fish the better off we will all be out here in the panhandle. There is nothing more fun than chasing flags on Box.

Ended up not having time to run by, but judging by the other lakes around here I wouldn't chance it especially with the weekend warm up.

Hi everyone,
I look forward to comming over and fishing Box Butte for the first time this winter. I have a quick regulation question.....I occasionally catch some decent sized golden shiners in a local pond here in Cheyenne (while jigging for panfish)  If I kept/froze them for later, am I allowed to use them as dead bait at Box Butte (or in Nebraska?) Just want to make sure I am not breaking any regulations. I know you cant transport live minnows but wasnt sure about dead bait.  Thanks a lot, Chris.
Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: hammerhandle41 on Dec 18, 2011, 08:06 PM
I'm not completely positive on the rules with dead bait but I would assume it would be OK because frozen smelt is one of the popular baits to use on Box Butte and they are all shipped in from out of state.

Post by: Fishingnerd33 on Dec 18, 2011, 08:30 PM
As long as they're dead you have nothing to worry about.
Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: OldAsDust on Dec 20, 2011, 11:59 AM
I don't know, but would this be the same as cut bait? With cut bait you can use it as long as it is caught and used at the same lake i believe. May want to contact game and parks to verify.

ULKING... I'll be keying on the pike but we may get bored and switch to perch or gills.  A little known fact is that there are some good eyes in there too but they tend to hang only in a certain spot! :o

I've heard about the eyes but I've only fished that once and didn't happen to fine any but its looking like the refuge lakes wont have ice by Thursday so I might be headed out west instead! Id be out there Thursday-sunday morning if possible so I might see some of you guys out there. Good luck fishing and be safe!

Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: hammerhandle41 on Dec 28, 2011, 01:30 PM
I was out to Box Butte yesterday too. The Ice was 10" to 11" on the west end, we ended up keeping 14 pike and one gill. Total caught was 18 pike and the gill, the smallest we caught was 12" and the biggest was 37 1/4" hog.  The average size of the fish that we caught was 20" to 27".
Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: Fish-icer on Dec 28, 2011, 03:04 PM
It's none of my business.  But why would anyone need to keep 14 pike.   ???

Title: Re: Boxbutte

because box butte has a special bag limit on pike because they are overpopulated big time. and they taste as good as any other fish when you get the y bones out

Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: T.R. on Dec 28, 2011, 11:09 PM
sorry bout that, it was meant to reply to the other question. i fish bb alot later in the season, and i usually use lots of tipups with either dead smelt or big chubs and suckers. ive caught northerns there on minnows nearly as big as the fish itself. jigging with a shiner on a kastmaster works good too, but oyu usually dont have time to mess around with a pole. tip ups are usually going non stop.
Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: wyotoach on Dec 29, 2011, 08:32 AM
You'd keep 14 for pickled pike, baked pike or any of the other great options you have. We kept 20 yesterday between three of us. The limit is 10 per person and they're are a ton of small ones because of the over competition for the food. The 35" incher that I caught yesterday had two perch and a 10" bluegill in it. There was no live bait to be found so all were caught on smelt. Great day on the ice!

Title: Re: Boxbutte

Lets say you were homeless and standing in line with 10 other people at a food shelter that was handing out turkeys for thanksgiving.  There are 10 of you standing in line and you are first.  The sign says, "limit 10 per person."  They only have 10 turkeys left to give out.  Now in the back of your head you know you want to take all 10, who wouldnt, I mean you are homeless after all.  But instead you do the moral thing and take 1 because you know that would be enough to feed you and your small homeless family.  Plus now each of you gets 1 turkey which is all you need in the first place.

Moral of this story is:  Take what you need, dont be greedy.  Too many fisheries get ruined because people take/keep more than what they actually need.  Enjoy the awesome fishery you have but let others enjoy it too.  Dont know if you have kids but dont you want them to be able to have the same experience you did?

Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: ULking on Dec 29, 2011, 01:41 PM
The lake is over populated with pike so they want you to take more out! That's the reason for the higher bag limit
Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: hammerhandle41 on Dec 29, 2011, 02:19 PM
Fisher-icer in most cases i would completely agree with you. But in this case I don't feel bad about taking that many pike out of that lake. Its just like the little ponds that are over run with little bluegill and every year that you fish it the size of those bluegill never change because no one takes any out. So in that respect I would like to go to box butte some day down the road and be able to catch bigger pike and more panfish, walleye and bass. But right now that's not as simple because the pike are eating every thing in that lake.

I agree but Butte is OVERPOPULATED. Someone needs to take ALOT of pike out of there, I personally don't like pike but alot of guys do, so those guys need to take them out so the fishery will have healthy numbers. Too many fish = stunting + unhealthy fishery. But the same works in reverse to, so most panfish in butte need released while the pike population is high, then more harvested when the pike numbers are healthier.

This is just my opinion and personal ethic, as long as its legal it's your prerogative to do whatever you want.

Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: wyotoach on Dec 29, 2011, 09:39 PM
I got blown off the lake today about 2 p.m. There was 3" of water on top of the ice so when the wind blew me down I wasn't all that thrilled. It was raining pretty hard by the time I got all the gear into the truck. The dip in the pressure sure shut the pike down. We iced two that are already with the others pickling as we speak.

With the lull I sat down with the vex and started pulling out some nice gills and a couple of perch. A tear drop with a waxie was the ticket. Meal worms were snubbed as were a bit of crawler. As the kids get bigger and chase the tip ups by themselves I'll hopefully have more time to catch the panfish!

On the funny side of things I lost my auger down the hole in 10' of water yesterday. Talk about a sinking feeling standing there with my auger head in hand watching the jiffy 3500 auger shaft sink to the depths below. I felt like I was starring in a scene of Grumpy Old Men. I left the remainder of the crew to tend to tip ups and ran to town for a magnet. Something that will always go with me in the shack now!!!!!!!!

Magnet $6.99, 20' of rope $5.02, feeling the CLANK and seeing the shaft raise from the bottom felt PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately this is my last trip of the year as I'm having the shoulder worked on. I want to see some pictures of the monsters you guys pull out!!

Wyotoach, how long do you think the ice will last due to the warm weather? I can't wait to male a trip out there if ice is available!
Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: wyotoach on Dec 29, 2011, 10:14 PM
I have no clue how long it will last. Temperatures in the 50s and 40+ mph winds doesn't bode well. The edge was real soft coming off today and there was 3" of standing water on top of the ice. The wind was whipping so hard that the water level in our holes was moving at least 6" vertically. Was spooky!

I have never seen tip ups get blown OUT of holes before! Luckily the trebles would catch the ice as they came out of the hole.

I'd check weather.com leading up to your trip and if the lows have been in the teens and 20's you should be ok. Just and opinion though, no relevence behind my thinking!

Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: wyotoach on Dec 29, 2011, 11:08 PM
That was our thought too Fishy! The one I cleaned tonight had 3 perch and some of our smelt from yesterday. We hooked a fish yesterday that we could never get to the hole and broke my black ice line. Not sure what pound test it is but we had 12" leaders on.  I'm guessing he'd have went well over 45".
Title: Re: Boxbutte
Post by: ICatchLilFishy on Dec 29, 2011, 11:18 PM
They are just eating machines. Last year I saw two 42, and a 40 pulled out of there so I wouldn't doubt it there are some monster pike in there. I caught a big one last year with two different trebble hooks in the mouth still.

Hunter's point is a great area for pike. Start anywhere from 3' out to 20'. I try to key on willows or weeds that i can see under the ice and set my bait from a foot off the bottom up to just 2' under the ice.

I am looking for some information about Boxbutte? Is there any motels within 30 miles of the lake? If not how close are the closest ones? Where would be the closest place to the lake to get an out of state license and fishing regs?
Thanks for any info.

Look online at Nebraska game and parks for regs and to buy permits.  Alliance, NE is probably your best bet for lodging.

Good fishing,

Keith

Al, There's a shop in crawford on the bait shop section here. There's also one south of Hay Springs and one in Alliance that has smelt and should have some live bait if they haven't sold out. The Hudson Ave Bait shop. Smelt are $2 a bag and Minnows are $3 for a doz of 2 1/2 to 3 inchers.

Drove up to Box Butte for the first time today, and had a blast.  Fishaholictaz and I got there around 10 and fished until 330 or so.  While the action was never really hot and heavy we landed a number of Pike (18"-27") on tip ups (frozen smelt) and also landed a few quality Gills, Perch and Crappie.  Panfishing was one here one there but they were generally nice sized.  Weather was beautiful as well.  Cheers, Chris

Make sure you read the rules,

7) a)The length is "as the fish lays" - not by squeezing the tail. The entry is measured from the furthest point to
the rear (tail) and front (lip). No open jaw .. if open measured from shortest point at head.(usually upper lip)

Does a guy need to  buy a Ne parks permit to fish and camp at the lake?  I'm know there is a campground that is a fee area but what about the west end or hunters pt.  is that a pay area?

When you enter at hunters point there are state signs so I'm pretty sure that you need to purchase the day permit or yearly permit.

you do need a nebraska park entry permit to enter anywhere on the sra of boxbutte, and i beleive you are supposed to pay the camping fee regardless of where you camp, but dont quote me on that.

I agree with PanhandleIce the bigger pike are at the west end. The access is easy it is the very next access point west of hunters point, it isn't as well marked as hunters point but its there. I pulled a 37" pike and several in the slot from the west end this year already.

I usually fish between 7' and 9' feet of water with the bait wetween 2' foot off the bottom and 2' under the ice. It just depends on what depth the pike are that day.

Walleyes feed when it is dark - pike don't feed much when it is dark.  Fish last light into the night and before it gets light in the morning.

Water clarity is around 4'. Better than Walgren at 2 but less than Shell at 6or more. By the way I made Ceviche from my pike from tues and it turned out awsome! If you have never tried it search for the recipe, there a lot of ways to make it. Just be sure to drain, rinse the lime juice before adding other ingredients and then put back in refrig for a couple hours..

walleye dont only feed when its dark. they feed any time of day they are hungry. they go on binges in the winter and when they eat, they eat. its a matter of finding them on the right day at the right time. the tactics for walleye fishing i use are quite a bit different than the ones i use for pike fishing, but i have picked eyes up fishing for northerns. to be honest, i have seen way more walleye caught durring the day than i have in the evening or night time hours. go with a smaller minnow on your tip ups and fish deeper water and move shallower until you find the fish. jigging raps work really well for walleye, but its still a matter of finding the fish.

If you're looking to catch walleye head up to Whitney by Chadron. They're a blast under tip ups during the day. And POO POO to walleye only feed at night. I've caught them in 100+ degree heat, in the middle of july just afternoon in Kansas in 3' of water. I think they get pigeon holed into 8-20' of water in low light conditions. Myabe I'm just lucky but had numerous 50+ fish days in Wisconsin and Kansas in the heat of the day. Find what they're eating and you'll catch fish.

thats been my experience also. ive caught them after dark, but not in near the quanity as durring the day. ive caught them in 3 feet of water also, at local lakes here in nebraska, in the heat of the day in july. walleye in the lakes around here are just weird. theres hardly any structure to most of the lakes so theres really no way to pinpoint them. just keep moving all day until you find them. ice fishing after dark is almost more trouble than its worth unless you come REALLY prepared

I don't think Keith said walleye ONLY feed when it's dark.  If you are serious about icing walleye, dawn and dusk are the best times to be there. There's really no arguing that in my experience.

Anyone been out to Box Butte lately. Wondering how the ice is and how this fishing is. Possibly headed there saturday or sunday. Tight lines.

Were heading up to fish box butte this weekend. Where is this Scott the minnow man located? Is he just in a house or a bait shop? Or else I also heard someone in alliance has good ones too? And also we are planning on fishing through the night and am looking for some eyes. Any pointers on depths and structure to look for?

There's a gentleman in Morrill, NE that sells live bait as well. His prices are fair and he usually has some big chubs. The big pike like those big sucker minnows & chubs.
He's on the corner of Howard and E Hamilton, cross the street SE of the High School. Go to the shop in the alley, if he's not there you can knock on the back door. He has a small sign or two up.

The guy in Scottsbluff (Scott, I think) is on the corner of 5th ave and east 19th st. He has some signs up, just go to the front door if he's not in the garage by the alley.

Drt,

Good luck finding very many walleye out there. One of the first fish I ever caught through the ice was a 17" walleye out there. Since then I have been on the pike/perch express.

I would say try doing everything your brother does, he realy seems to catch alot of fish, and not just thru the ice all the time..
i would try useing ice flys tiped with wax-meal worns, 4 & 5 inch plugs dont catch many gills but i guess it could snag one ???. the main thing i would say is just try to copy your brother as close as you can and you will have luck..       good luck you need it, see ya out there..

i would say got you brother lol ;D @)

I was out yesterday and the ice was 11" off of Hunters Point about 250 yards out. Caught 3 perch real quick and the nothing. Did not catch a single pike for the first 3 hours. Then I started jigging a few in to tally out at 10 Pike for the day. Fished 2 lines the whole day with 12" suckers but no takers on the bigguns. Not a single hooked fish on sucker meat for once either. Real slow for me but tons of fun none the less!
