I built a $3500 ice fishing sled
« on: Jan 06, 2010, 01:51 PM »
It wasn't hard... I just threw a 12v battery, my Humminbird 1197 and flasher in it ;D

I've always done very well on the crappie by jigging around the log cribs in some of the coves but have struggled through the ice. My handheld GPS has such a small screen and severe lag time. It was a pain to pin point the structure and some times I never could find it. I always had to drill a ton of holes just to get close. Not anymore  ;D

This year, I bought an extra set of cables and transducer for my 1197 so that I could take the unit with me on my annual trips to Manitoba so figured what the heck, I'd give it a shot on the ice... It worked great. I got to where the GPS said the crib would be and drilled a hole. There she was. Just for the heck of it, I lowered the side imaging transducer down and swiveled it slowly and found the area was stacked with crappie. I peppered the area with holes and set to jigging. They were hitting extremely light today and the wind made seeing the hits hard but I managed a dozen or so crappie up to 14". There were a ton of bluegill and spot tail shiners in the mix too. I was off the ice a little after 10. Now that I know it works, I'm looking forward to using the side imaging in some other areas. Should be interesting  ;)

The sled is a Strikemaster Glide Lite ;) I love it... It has 5 rod holders, it fits a big bucket perfectly and has room for tackle boxes up front or in my case a 12v battery and electronics  ;D

Way cool!
Kapt is revved up for ice this year. He's going to be down at the shop Saturday after work to load up on bait. We're gonna go take a beating on Winchester Sunday.

i would watch a reality show called "pimp my sled"......you bring in your tiny jet sled jr and it comes back much bigger with a fresh paint job, some new decals, a vexilar, UVS, microwave, flip down flat screen's with the dvd hookup, satelite, reclining chair, mini fridge.

if the trout are lost, smash the state.

Nice set up, Now my only problem is that I wouldn't walk away from the sled to check the tip ups. I'd have t drag it behind me everywhere.
