Is it legal to catch a whitefish, kill it, and use it for bait? I read in the regs that it is illegal to use sport caught fish as bait. I wasn't sure about this though.

lotsa people do it and since it is not classified as a sport fish (like herring/hooligan) i think youll be alright. by the way AKblood this is Hunt&FishAK on the alaska outdoors forum

Oh, hey H&FAk, thanks for the info. I think I'll try to find some whitefish and catch some lakers and burbot.
