Drilling holes...
« on: Dec 11, 2011, 09:05 PM »
Im semi new to ice fishing and have been looking at a ton of videos online. I've noticed that guys do different approaches to their holes. I've seen figure 8'sout with a full hole and a half. What other techniques are out there to optimize ice fishing?

I like more of zig zag. I like to postion the from shallow to deeper water. when I find what depth thier biting I move the zig zag  in line with that depth. The figure 8 does the same thing.
I like using 5 traps, and one jigging pole. I somtimes use 4 for the zig zag pattern, and exploratory trap.
Sometimes 3 in one spot and 2 in another.
you could use a V pattern.

if you fish with a friend you can use a 3 by 4 grid spred out by about 15 to 20 feet between holes i tend to do that from shallow to deep but i will drill extra holes to move around and/or jig in

If I'm alone I have no problem cutting a dozen or more holes in an area, usually in a grid pattern from shallow to deeper water. I try to look at maps for new areas or focus on areas I have found in the summer. I try and focus on drop offs or weed edges. One of my most productive areas is a cut onto a flat that is flanked by grass on one side and lilly pads on the other. Early am it can be non stop just trying to get type in.
