Navionics for my Droid
« on: Oct 02, 2012, 02:48 PM »
I was looking into getting a Navionics chip for my handheld gps.  $99.99 and It was regional, meaning I would get like 10 states all being south of me.  Got me thinking there may be something for my smartphone...  Low and behold there is a $9.99 app on google play.  The entire U.S. is covered.  Found most of my regular spots are supported, most everyplace I checked that has concrete boat ramps at least.  For the $10 I think thos will be very helpful.

Just passing along the free flow of info.

I just bought the same app for iphone. Not sure how exact the gps position is gona be yet, but its nice I can look at lake maps from my phone now. And it beats my old system of taking a lake map book out in my boat. Well worth the 10 bucks to me.

Its great on the android.  What is really nice is when you upgrade to a new phone, keep your old phone for a dedicated handheld GPS (you don't feel so bad when your old phone goes down an ice hole).  Even without phone service, you still have GPS and the Naviaonics app installed (downloadmore maps via Wifi)

Did you know you can overlay the google earth map!  Then you have satellite image on land and navionic contour over the water.  And they line up almost perfectly everywhere I'm looking.

Used it last year, not super-accurate, but plenty good for finding features and use the flasher to zero in on the spot . I agree well worth $10.

Does it only last a year? Or time limit?

As long as you have your phone, and should be able to download it to a new phone if you get one.

I checked it out the other day, and it doesn't have the lake I do most of my ice and summer fishing on :( major bummer and suprise as it's a hot spot in province for both ice and open water.  >:(

Ya know, if anyone would like me to check if your favorite spots are listed before you spend the $$, let me know and I'll check for ya.  Name of body of water, nearest town, and what state.

Yes.
Google search navionics, their homepage has a lake list somewhere. Its very handy, the GPS is as accurate as Google maps or the other GPS apps I've tried. My only complaint is the new update doesn't like my phone, and I preferred  the old layout, but it still works alright.

I have it on my android... The contours are honestly more accurate on that ap than on on my lakemaster chip on a few lakes.

Is it worth $9.99? no, it's worth at least $50....

I've got it myself, awesome app! I used it a ton on Leech in February. It's also really cool if you don't have a gps unit on your boat, you can turn on speed over land and get a mph on your boat.

It took about 15 minutes to download Devils Lake.  But it says once you download a map area, it stays on forever.

There's a community layer where anyone with this app can set a marker on points of interest, water hazards, and many other things then visible to everyone else.

Reviving a thread here....

I bought this app a week ago, mainly because Lakemaster is no more, (as far as I'm concerned) and I'm tired of looking at my tiny Rino 120 screen.

All I can say is WOW.  I downloaded all of the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan with it so far, takes up about 750mb of memory on my phone, which isn't much really.  This much stuff would have probably cost $400 minimum if acquired from Lakemaster.

10 bucks.  Anyone with an android or iphone should buy this app,  before Navionics gets wise and jacks the price. ;)

Too bad it is not compatible with my Nexus 7.  I do have it on my Droid X phone, but the larger screen would be nice!

Another thing to keep in mind.... some phones have satellite GPS receivers in them.  Make sure if you have that option, to turn it on.  Much more accurate than cell triangulation.  Also works with no cell signal.

I have been using the app for a couple of years.  Was very buggy at first but has been somewhat worked out.  One thing I did notice is that the version I have (Lakes: US North v5.3.1) is no longer supported and I have to go download a new/different version (Marine&Lakes:USA).  For the $10, it is worth doing so....going to do that now.   I was looking in the App Store and noticed it is $50 on my iPAD and $10 for iPhone.

MN DNR has free app (not very good, but is free to download).
