Have you tried one of these for big toothy things?
« on: Jan 14, 2008, 06:46 PM »
I found some of these sized Chubby's at Reed's this summer.  Lots of people dont even know they make them in the size big pike like.  My buddy caught this one yesterday on natural perch.    If you target big pike you should get one!

What do chubbys do? Forgive my ignorance, I don't own any. ???

Are they like a jigging rap  ???

I have seen them in stores but I didn't want to spend the dough on something shaped like a potato!

Ahhh, I see! They work like a rattle trap or a rattlin rap just not as extreme or noisy. It is a good idea! Thanks, I am gonna pick up a few. Not real cheap, are they! :-\

The jig in the photo is not a standard size Chubby they are called Giant Chubby's they are 5,1/2" long and weight 3 1/2 oz.  They are HOT on Big pike and I have caught one 26" walleye on one.  Here is salmo's site on them http://www.salmofishing.com/lures/giant_chubby.html  If you target BIG PIKE get one and give it a try They work! The Pike in the photo was 15lbs.  Im  hoping to catch one the size Meadowman catches up in Sask on one this winter.

I to am interested in the giant chubby darter for big pike and big walleye, but, alas I have yet to find a tackle shop in Sask. that carries them. :-\

I like the action of the little guys that I have seen on camera.
I bet that the giant chubby darter really jiggles the rod eh?

The Giant Chubby has the exact same action as their smaller brothers.  Yes you need a stout ice rod for them.  I was very lucky last summer finding them at Reed's in Walker mn.  I have never seen them at anyother sporting goods store.  You can order them direct from the importer on that addy I posted,I think.  I could not even find them on Thorne bros. web page.  You might try emailing Reed's  and see if they have any left.  I recomend the real perch... I also bought a HOT Perch but havent caught anything on it.

I use a Grenz jigging rod rigged with 20lb spectra and a titanium leader.....  The firetiger Giant Chubby did the trick this weekend.  I had a tip-up hit twice with the pike just pulling the smelt and dropping it.  I went to the hole and dropped the Chubby and within a min or so BAM!  She Swallowed the hole JIG and its BIG!  Had her for dinner tonight baked with Mango salsa.

Time to update this thread.

I was wondering who else has used the giant chubby darter, and if so were they successful?

I still haven't found any in my area. :P

Do any of you know where you can find them in Sask. or CAN?

The Giant Salmo Chubby Darter has arrived... ;D

Only problem I have now is they make my fishing poles feel like I've got fish on!  :o  I need to research into other rods to figure which one will jig it properlyl.  Thank you pike fishermen for giving me this new problem to work on.  Thank you.  >:(
