New permanent shack
« on: Dec 10, 2009, 04:17 PM »
I'm building a new perm. Here's a few photos of the floor. I used 2 1/2" x 3/16 Alum. for the joists. The runners are obviously 2x8. The deck is 5/8 CDX. Over all dimmentions are 5' x 10'. I'm tossing around the idea of using insulated overhead door pannels for the walls ;D I have a buddy who can get them cheap.(free!) I'd make corners out of alum. that would hold everything together. The 10' wall on the back might need a "strap" somewhere in the middle to keep it straight. Then frame the door with some 2" alum c-channel. I'm going to use a door from a camper, or mobile home. The roof will be tin. (barn steel)
Here's some start up pics.

OK, so the overhead door idea didn't pan out. Anybody know the weight difference between luan (1/4 plywood) vs. Barn steel?? I want to keep it as light as possible.

luan may absorb the elements. You may want to consider a product called twin wall ;it's a double layer plastic with air space in between lightweight and strong comes in nominal thicknesses and assorted colors including a lexan clear . Consider a dark color for heat absorbtion and a clear door for veiwing

I made a cover for a trailer that i used to haul camping gear. I left it, un-painted, out behind the garage for many years before it started to come apart. I suspect that luan will do well if you paint it on all sides before assembly and maintain it each spring.

good luck

Looks like you attatched the joists with a lag bolt?Y ou might want to consider adding some sort of side support,  I would hate to see your skids break off .Travering the ice is hard on skids, especially if there is any snow. Looks good though!!!

I ran the sheathing down the outside past the floor and onto the skis that should help with the "camber" issue

Getting ready for paint. I took this one pic. then my camera ran out of juice.
I'll be out fishing ALL DAY tomorrow, that will give the paint time to dry, but I'll take pic.s on Fri. when we take her out so you can see her all painted up!! Badger, Red & White, "on Wisconsin."

I've never worked with those metal studs. Are they strong enough that a guy could use a crank down wheelhouse frame and just rivet the exterior siding to the metal studs? Would it be safe to run down the highway?

Instead of paint, have you considered the colored truck bedliner ?

Once it is sprayed on and dries, your shack would be indestructible.

The studs get most of their strength from the sheathing. i.e. sheetrock, OSB, (or CDX) or even steel. (barn tin) I did sheet the inside as well as the outside for this reason. It held up to my test. I "form tackled" it at the corners while in my driveway to see if anything would give, and after about 15 min. I was tired and nothing came loose. I would think if you riveted it in a pretty tight pattern (6" or so between rivets.) and had some sheathing inside, you should be able to run her down the highway. The studs are really light which was the big thing for me, as I'll be loading it on and off a trailer. She loaded on pretty easy, I just tilted the trailer, and pulled it up with a "come-along".

Wiener, can you put that stuff on over paint?? I already got it painted, but that would be AWSOME for next winter!!!

The Badger lettering may be a bit much, but my boy likes it! Next year I'm probably going to Rino-liner the outside and floor.
