Wow! Sat morning.  The south pit was almost completely open yet.  You must be brave and must of been by the dock or in the SE corner of the North pit.

That place is always hit and miss all year.  Nice that the DNR finally got control of it back from the City of Ames and their BS rules.

Walleyes have been put in and I've caught some.  Pretty small @ 15"

Supposedly trout are on their way in if not in already.  That should be interesting.

Not seeing the huge slabs we used to there much anymore.

The DNR stocked the trout already and are talking about doing it again when they see the ice conditions. I stayed in the North pit. The DNR is also talking about mapping it this spring so that will definitely help.

There were 4 or 5 shacks on the North side last night when I drove by.  I haven't been on it yet so couldn't tell you if they're catching anything.  Not much ice on the south side as the geese camping out there and keeping it open.

I was out there yesterday for about 5 hours.  Only had one hit.  Tried lots of jigs with different bait (waxies, minnows, minnow heads).  Seems like the fish would come through every 45 minutes or so, be there for about 10 seconds, then move on.  Talked to a couple guys who had both caught a trout.  Another guy I heard had marked some suspended crappies.  Probably going out again tomorrow afternoon.  I was on the east side about half way between the ramp and the foot bridge in around 22 ft of water.  Ice was around 8 inches.

I haven't been out since a week ago.  Marked a few but didn't catch anything.  They are stocking more trout in Ada Hayden this friday (14th) at noon.  FYI everyone.  I just barely know anything about the lake, so that is what keeps me from going out more I guess.  I can be there in 5 minutes, but lately I have been going to Brushy!

Well the trout were stocked in at noon today.  Drove by after lunch at 12:30 to find about 40 huts and many more guys standing on the ice 20' away from the boat ramp where they dumped in the trout.  Absolutely helarious.  Reminded me of seeing the little trout pool at the circus.

Now do those guys really think those stressed, moved fish are going to bite right away?  You gotta be kidding me.  Plus how big could they really be.

Did see one smart guy fishing the south pit by the point shhhhh.  WHERE THE CRAPPIES ARE!

I've seen it all now!

I would say about 15-20 people had their limit of 5 by 2:00, myself included.  My 5 ranged from 12"-16".  Best way to hook-em was to sight fish.

I got to the lake at about 12:30 yesterday, just as they were finishing stocking.  We set up about 50 yards west of where they stocked (away from shanty town) and about 20 feet off of the shore.  We didn't have a bite until about 1:15, then caught 9 in about 20 minutes (there were two of us).  The school then moved off and we had to wait another hour until we got our last one.  The trout were about a foot below the ice.  When the school was there, the bite was on.  It was the most fun I've ever had ice fishing.  I would recommend it to anyone.  Largest one was 14" and smallest was 12".

Ice is about 12inches thick...Lots of houses out today.  We had a number of groups of trout swim under us until about 9AM, then nothing.  Only picked off a couple.  Not real interested in what we had down there.

yesterday the ice was a clear 12".  We used small jigs tipped with two wax worms.  Worked well for us.

So did ya hand auger or gas ?? Just curious if anyone is using gas augers there,i dont think its a big deal but cant even have a gas motor on your boats your auger might drip a drop of oil on the ice and pollute the hole lake!! YA RIGHT!!! :%$#!:

unless there is a sign saying no gas augers allowed you can use gas augers on all lakes in iowa!!

there actually is a sign that says no gas augers, but it must be a city of ames rule because i saw people using them while several DNR guys were there and nobody batted an eye.
