How much ice is enough?
« on: Feb 13, 2007, 12:42 PM »
Just back from a scouting trip to at Little Ossipee in preperation for Sunday's derby. There were six or seven trucks on the ice. Talked to a guy fishing near shore who said he had about 16 in of ice. I know thats enough for a truck but how much is needed for a bunch of trucks, if there are , lets say 50 or 60 trucks out there? I'd feel better w/ 3 feet of ice but I don't have an extention for my auger!

check the back of the maine regulations book there is a chart.(judging ice conditions)..theres just something about that many trucks close to each other that makes me uncomfortable. 15 inches of ice-heavy truck (10 ton gross) 20 inches of ice(25 tons gross) hope that helps

Well, I got a 12" rule before I'll drive on, give me 16" and I'm good.
I've drove a loaded tri-axle dump on 30"(not mine of course..lol)
That chart in the rule book is for moving vehicals too, which is better then sitting in one place.

6+ of black ice i'll take an atv and ice shack.  12+ of good solid black ice I will drive and park the pickup out there.  was on darimascotta lake this past weekend, 15 inches  of black ice and drove out there no problems with a shack and truck parked right there plus 5 people, the ice barely moved.

We fished middle range saturday. All was going good untill three trucks pulled up next to us. 10 inches of ice was flexing, cracking.  :cookoo: :cookoo: :cookoo:

I was ready to run for the shore.

I've always been told that 16" of good black ice can hold a fully loaded logging truck.

hear is a chart that you can go by

Ice Thickness*      Permissible Load
3 inches              Single person on foot
4 inches              Group in single file
7-1/2 inches        Passenger car (2-ton gross)
8 inches              Light truck (2-1/2-ton gross)
10 inches            Medium truck (3-1/2-ton gross)
12 inches            Heavy truck (8-ton gross)
15 inches           10 tons
20 inches           25 tons
30 inches           70 tons
36 inches           110 tons

*Solid clear blue/black and lake ice.
Slush ice has only half the strength of blue ice.
Strength value of river ice is 15 percent less.
fishing = paradise
