A couple first's- with pic and story
« on: Mar 03, 2015, 07:07 AM »
Been fishing this one lake for 3 years trying to jig up a brown. I know their in there just haven't ever caught one. The other day I was jigging my spot for a couple hours with no luck. decided to move in shallow to jig up a couple brookies at least not to get the skunk.  Was in about 4ft of water nice sandy/rocky bottom jigging away.  I started seeing these small flashes right on bottom. Looked closed and they were smelt trying to grab my jig. Put on the smallest pimple I had and was able to jig up 6 or so of the largest ones. That was a first for me, never jigged fresh water smelt before. If I had an even smaller jig I could have really done well on them.  Then all of a sudden there was 6 or so smelt hanging around my jig when they all scattered and something raced by the whole. This happened twice. So I put a different jig on and started jigging again. Smelt came over and started to try and hit my jig, then they scattered this time the fish hit my jig. I hooked him, but not well enough started to get his head into the hole and he shook his head and was free. I could tell it was a Brown then right away. The freaking adrenalin was running then let me tell you. went back to jigging, about an hour went by. all of a sudden the smelts scattered again as the brown raced by the hole. Took one of the smelt I had jigged tossed him on a small hook and sent him down on another jigpole in the hole next to the one I was jigging. I went back to jigging after a few minutes the smelts came back, few minutes later so did the brown. this time when the smelts raced off there was one left behind. It was cool to see the brown come back to the smelt I had on a hook take a look then swing around and nail my jig. set the hook hard this time and he was dinner. Not a giant but a keeper.

Beautiful brown and great story!  The biggest brown I ever jigged was also in shallow water.

Beautiful fish, congrats. Interesting you found smelt in such shallow water, I've read they don't like to be in less than 20 FOW under the ice.

Thanks folks.  I was tucked into a very small cove, I honestly think there was another brown with this one and they had the smelt corralled up in there.  were basically taking turns feasting on smelt. any thoughts?

That sounds like a lot of fun, nice fish.

Great colors on that brown. I'd be back there with small hooks for those smelts, if they were still hanging around. :)

Great story! Only ever caught two browns. Let me tell you none of them were as clearly marked as he was. Beautiful fish. Isn't it ironic how stuff works?!
