I am a little person so I can get out there on about 1.5 of solid black.   Gotta get in as much as I can on the thin ice before the snow comes.  Luckily though my friends pull me in the sled when there is too much snow or slush.

I believe they are pulling something or someone out of mattawa right now, down by the inflow. Not positive what went through.

fished 2 3/4" just a few weeks ago.  That was the thickest ice on the pond and in many places ice was only 1 1/2"

I'll go as thin as 2 inches black if I've got somebody with me I know I can trust to help get me out.  Alone I prefer at least 3 or 4 inches, though.

Even with the foot+ we've got around here, I still wear my ice picks around my neck and have a whistle on me.  I'm not a big fan of swimming, especially not in the winter...

in a act of shear drunken stupidty i crabbed out on my buddies pond with a hammer and a trap with a and set it in just so we could say we got the first fish of the year all the guys we fish with have a yearly pool for first biggest and most, hence the name half inch!!  Now that was a couple years ago age has taught me that it sucks to fish with soaking wet boots and clothes so i dont go less than 1.5 - 2.0

Before Christmas I had a guy come in our shop, saying he was going out as soon as possible.  So I asked where ice was building at that time, ... his response, no idea, but if there is a tree near by, I have rope !!!!  UGH     GO FISH

I don't measure ice.  I walk with my chipper and if it goes through in one chip I slowly walk back the other way.  This is if I'm by myself.
However, I do check depth when I drag out the shanty.

1 1/2 -2" hard ice I dont like it this thin but I have and will fish it. At the end of the season things change though and I am much more cautious.

General ice thickness guidelines

General rule of thumb from USFW and Dept of Natural Resources specifies the following:

For New, Clear Ice Only
2" or less - STAY OFF
4" - Ice fishing or other activities on foot
5" - Snowmobile or ATV
8" - 12" - Car or small pickup
12" - 15" - Medium truck
Remember that these thicknesses are merely guidelines for new, clear, solid ice. Many factors other than thickness can cause ice to be unsafe.

Its not the thickness but the qulaity of ice.  6" of pourous soft ice is way worse than 3" of hard, black ice.

Earlier in the season I fished on 4" with my 4-wheeler. I stayed near the shore where the water was 1-3 feet deep. When I got to where I wanted to go out, I got off and drilled every 20-30 feet out to where I wanted to be, checking the thickness 4". Then went back to get my machine. Later I was asked if the ice was safe? I told them NO I don't recommend anyone else doing what I did. One thing to consider is the air temp on a really cold day the ice is hard and you can away with much more.

If you look at the photo to left, that was last spring. The ice was 9 1/2" and it was cold. Off in the distance you can see open water. The wind picked up that day and started making waves in the open water. In the time it took to make some bacon and sausage, the ice started coming apart. Look close enough and you can see my heritage laker to the left and the slush where my other trap was. We packed it up and got the *** out of there. I had to wait for the ice chunks to float back together to jump from one to the next. Had to get a photo because no one would believe me!
Are you afraid to catch big fish?<br />I can help!
