I agree X2.   Was there anyone over 25 or 30 years old in the group?  The reason I ask is that when I was a young guy, I liked to make a pile fish or ducks or whatever

Funny but as you get older, you kind of outgrow that urge..  At least I did.
If I was to name everyone in the group you may NEVER come back to this site again!!!

Imagine a group doing this EVERY weekend?!

That would be awesome. If everyone killed every pike they caught maybe catching a pike in Maine would be like catching a brookie in Sabbattus.

If pike were competing for food say...Smelt...or Shad...Id agree.. But they are canabalistic fish and its been proven that the biggest pike eat primarily their own as this fish is territorial. Thinning out the pike species is in essence thinning out their own food source.

Well I am certianly no fisheries bioligist like cmain, but here's my .02.

Pike are cannabalistic, no arguments. But so are Togue, 30 years ago Moosehead held some whopper Togue...and we all know the history from there. Over-run...no limit on togue..catching small ones all the time.......Maybe cmain can clear this up for us...and outdo our states fishery bioligists.

Pike do feed on pike, but I would argue that 20 pounders will be more abundant with a lrger population of pike...cmain have you ever been pike fishing with some huge bait and been skunked..when the guys next you have medium shiners and have been catching pike all day?

You can't fix it.....and I don't mean the pike situation

Check this link about bait for lobster .  http://www.workingwaterfront.com/articles/Legislature-may-ban-offal-in-alternative-lobster-bait/10832/

Why is an article being re-published in 2012 that was 1st issued in 2005?

Titled:
Legislature may ban "offal" in alternative lobster bait

So I did a search and can find nothing on the final decision?

Quote
The word "offal" was defined to include "carcasses, waste parts, renderings, or remains" from both wild and domestic animals, except for hairless animal hide.

Makes no mention of fish by the way...

Adam,
If ever there was a reason to start fishing for Pike, I'd definitely be willing to get some to trade for some of those red colored underwater bugs....  ;)2

from the DMR website : Bait
Title 12, Section 6432-A
It is unlawful to use offal bait to fish for or take lobsters or crabs. Offal means the carcass, waste parts, renderings or remains of a wild or domesticated animal that is not a marine organism, but does not include animal hide from which the hair has been removed.

Note: The possession of offal while fishing for or taking lobster or crabs is a violation of this section.

i do not believe this law applies to fish

Im by no means trying to be disrespecful...But Ill be the bad guy and play devils advocate today.

I think its good that you are using these fish for "something" rather than just leaving them on the ice to die.

BUT I think that people should look at the big picture here. When you harvest pike from sabattus with a fine come like you guys did...It lessens the chances of future 20 or 30 pounders. Imagine a group doing this EVERY weekend?! Age & quantity of food is a big determining factor for a lake to produce Extra large pike...If we constantly kill every pike (Pike Eat Pike by the way) we ice in this lake we keep its potential for producing GIANTS to a minimum.

As sports fishermen on here what do we value more? Giving our friends lobster bait or the option of having a lake that can provide a memory of a life time for our kids or ourselves (who are kids at heart ice fishing) who have the chance of landing a personal record fish. Sabattus is a pike lake for GOOD...there is no changing that, but we can control how good of a "pike lake" it is by practicing catch and release 90% of the time.

My father was in the military and we spent 8 years stationed in Europe...The pike were ENORMOUS!! caught one so big three of us held it for a pic (SIDE BY SIDE) for a local news paper. Most of the biggest recorded pike are from Europe which all due to the common practice of catch and release.

I am not looking to be disrespectful...just thought we should look at it from a different perspective. Sabattus is already becoming extremely repretable for its pike...and its been proven that Farm ponds are some of the biggest producers of this fish...Why? because it is rarely harvested and the fish are able to grow old and large.

I agree with your post completely.  It is a Pike Lake for good.  I don't care what anyone says....A couple of winters of harvesting like this and the lake will be cleaned out.  Whats wrong with throwing them back so the next family that comes along can chase flags all say as well ?

I know of two other groups whom aren't even on this website that have caught Pike on that lake in the same numbers and have done the same thing with killing them all.

I don't think anyone can argue that harvests like that are sustainable.  If I am proven otherwise I'll gladly admit I am wrong.

Awesome thread goes to the birds...AGAIN  Nice kill shots. My new goal is to kill more than you guys did.

This thread has gone to the birds because of differing opinions than yours ?  Everyone that has differed up to this point has been respectful so I can only draw the conclusion that your comment of this thread being "gone to the birds" is strictly because you are not receptive to a differing opinion.  Sad really.

Soooooooooo.........
If it has been excepted practice to use suckers, I do not understand why so many people have a problem using pike?

Just curious, how do you think pike would work for Coyote bait? :o
