Was out on a farm pond in the Elgin area last night.  Under the snow the ice was very questionable but the edges and snow free areas had 2.5-3 inches.  Managed to catch about a 13" bass in the half hour before dark.  Heading back out Sunday after the snow ends to check things out.  Tight lines everyone
mmmmmmmmmmmmm. . . . . ice

If we wouldnt have all this cottonpikkin snow the ice would be a foot thick by now. I got 3-4 inches of ice in my area wif 4-6 inches of snow on top of it! Slushin up at 15 degrees >:(  Ain't makin crap even when it drops to 5 degrees at night!  Also the word SAFE means different things to different people :o

Fished a farm pond South of Des Moines last Sunday and we sat on 2 - 3" ice.  The ice was good ice, but still pretty scary to me.  We fished close to two hours and caught around 60 gills (30 keepers).  The only bad part was that we could use our shack because we were worried it would be too much weight in one area with two guys and a shack.

The snow in central iowa is light fluffy stuff and there was only an inch or two on top of the ice, so I'm hoping that it isn't insulating things too bad.  I'm hoping to get back out at least once this weekend so I have some fish to fry up.

Checked a pond in Johnson County and had a thin 2".  I haven't drilled any holes on MacBride yet, and I haven't seen anyone out there either.  Hopefully by this weekend.

Here in Ames I just got off the ice about an hour ago, fishing on a small pond by Ada Hayden and it had about 5 inches of ice on it.  3 of us were out there and we caught about 50-60 bluegills and 5 small bass.  Only 2 decent bluegills though.

I have been fishing in Norwalk on 3-4'' with my portable. It's really strong ice otherwise I wouldn't think about having the portable out. Oh by the way it's a 4 acre pond in the back yard. Should have close to 5 inches I would think after the cold air this weekend.

I fished the slough (Strugeon?)off the parking lot between PDC and Marquette last weekend and caught a bunch of gills. most around5-6 inches and some 8 inchers. You do have to compete for space as it is a popular spot.
